Running an "out of tune" R

Post by rphforbmw »

A question to the wise sages of the board....
Is there any real harm to running an R that is running poorly due to a need for a 12,000 service (14,000 on bike now)
It doesn't start easily and runs "jerkily" (read..surges) on rpms below 4000.
The reason I ask is that I had such a poor "reception" from a service manager at a new dealer near me that I told him not to touch my bike, that I would pick it up and I won't be needing your services.
I thought I would try them,as they're new and might be trying harder to make a name for themselves. Was I mistaken, he could of cared less about my business.
Anyway, my regular dealer has lead times out 4 weeks and I'm afraid the service won't be getting done before then.
I haven't done any tuning to the bike before (throttle bodies, valves), and don't have the time to do it myself due to too many prior commitments and a long trip in my near future to plan for.
SO, will it "hurt" my faithful steed to run her this neglectfully?
Thanks ahead of time,
Tom

It happen to me once before, I can't even start the engine, not to mention to keep the idleing. Then I find out it's the throttle cable has been pull out the sucker, just put it back in it runs normal again.

Shouldn't do any major harm.

Modern oils are so good you can leave them in for quite high mileages.

Lumpy and out of tune will just use more fuel and reduce the performance a little.

As a long term I'd learn to service the bike your self. The RR is really a good bike to start on, servicing is really easy once you know how. Start with the simple tasks, ask around, practice, get the proper tools. You'll really bond with your bike after a good service.
