After the subject came up about my Beemer bike, he told her that BMW doesn't want anyone to know but the BMW motor (don't know which one) is made by the same Mo-Ped company that makes his mo-ped.
If I discover my bike is really a BIG Mo-Ped I'm gonna....Well, hell I don't know what I'm gonna do!

A Boxer motor in a mo-ped!? I don't think so, that is BMW's trademark motor, been making for decades; hell it use to be in their aeroplanes.

He is probably talking about the 650 singles. He would probably not know about the new twins in the BMW F800s. Austrian Rotax engines have a fabulous pedigree and have been used by many manufactures. No cause for concern!
"Moped" is commonly used as a generic term for scooter. (Although a Moped is a real product.)

Does Aprilia actualy make engines for BMW or is it that they both use Rotax engines in some of their bikes? I had an Aprilia Scarabeo 150 that had a Rotax engine in it. Never let me down.
Bombardier make the light train that I some times catch on the way to work.
Aprilia make some fine motor bikes of their own. The V-twins are stonking motors. The original F650 was made on the same lines as their own version using the same engine with slightly differant tune.
I think that BMW might have started and another cooperation with Aprilia, I could be wrong it might be another manifactor.
All the F650 motors (F.I. & carburetted) have been made by Rotax. The early carburetted F650's were assembled by Aprilia. When the switch was made to F.I. BMW moved production to their own plant.
The new F800 also has a BMW designed engine made by Rotax. Rotax engines have a reputation equal to or even better than BMW's own products. Rotax engines are used in some light aircraft applications, and there's no margin for error there.
I had an Aprilia made F650 and it was equal in quality to any of the BMW's I've owned. Loved that bike. My next bike will probably be an F800. Same HP as the 1150R, 100lbs lighter.

The Disaster came when BMW brought the production in house. The first couple of years of the fuel injected GS 650 had more than its share of problems. The Classic F650's (1994-1999) were among the best selling and most reliable model BMW's. I had one for 30,000 + miles and never had a problem with it. I am looking forward to checking out the F800's the same horsepower as the R with 100 lbs less weight.
Having owned a 99 F650ST, I can tell you that it wasn't a recipe for disaster, other than the noisy combination of the cam/trans, it was as reliable as a sherman tank...
True the F series was not an arian German, but an Italian-Austrian breed, but a very reliable bike never the less...

Actually it' s true but the assembly people that make the mopeds are smaller and of a more irritable disposition (elves). Those that assemble our bikes are much larger and of easier demeanor hence why our bikes cost a bit more.
