Hey, don't mind FM696969, officer. We're still trying to help him figure out how to manage a basic valve adjustment..

In your profession you know first hand; There's one in every crowd...

SitR1150R wrote:believe it or not Harry, most of the officers I work with also do not like the high fines. I would much rather give someone a small ticket that wont hurt them financially, but will make them pause next time.
Even small tickets hurt. The ticket I received in Utah (65mph in a 55mph zone) was on a pristine highway (the dark asphalt looked as though it was recently paved). This was in the middle of nowhere (I may have seen only 6 cars in a 15 minute span). I had full protective and responsible regalia (leathers and helmet). I modulated my speed when it started to climb (due to enjoying the scenery); it's what one does when there's no cruise control. I was a danger to noone. I was courteous, and in no way was blatantly speeding, since I was in no hurry taking this side road (it was SR20; the interstate is posted at 75mph). However, Iron County seems to be a sparsely populated county in southwestern Utah, and there aren't many means of government revenue. My truck insurance went up because of this one ticket (the last ticket I received was 7 years earlier)... by $300 per year! More shocking is that this was a 50% increase in my annual premium. I'm sure this Highway Patrol officer must have been bored and unable to collect a decent quota, and any infraction was interpreted to the letter of the law and not by the prevailing conditions. If I was doing 56mph, that may have been enough to get pulled over (exceeding the posted 55mph limit). What makes me "pause the next time" is not by giving me this iffy ticket; I had a CHP give me a warning after a long lecture for taking a neighborhood curve too fast. This officer also rides. He made sense regarding the small side streets with cars attempting to enter onto the faster road, and was concerned about my safety. That was back in '98, and I haven't sped through that curve since... all without having to give me a ticket.
Traffic signals timed for 35mph, are also timed for 70mph.

speeding

Post by johnt650 »

I personally have less problem with being stopped than I do the increased insurance rates. Too bad we can't lobby against this rape by insurance. The police and troopers that enforce these laws should keep that in mind when they are stopping Joe Average with a radar unit that may have been donated by an insurance company. More people should be given breaks unless they are seriously endangering the public.

On the flip-side, what if we pushed to get the speed limits on the interstates raised to 75MPH across all of North America.

FM696969 - Two things.

First off - chill out man! To insult cops in general the way you did is an indicator that you are the one with issues! To do it after some board members who are LEOs have posted is demonstrating absolutely no class! :?

And second - TURN OFF THE CAP LOCKS!

To all our LEO board members, I hope you take his opinion for what is worth! (not much!)

bro:

if you want to kiss a cops ass, your more than welcome, i'm not stopping you, but i don't want to kiss a cops ass, so just keep your comments to yourself and just keep kissing the cops ass, they love it.

i will never kiss a cops ass to get me out of a ticket, cops love to see the fear in your eyes and love the way people kiss their ass to try to get out of a ticket, if the cop had a bad day with his wife,no amount of ass kissing will get you out of a ticket.

FM696969 - Thank you very much for your last post which makes it very clear who has the issues!

I do not believe the kissing of ass was the topic. I believe the discussion was centered around respect and honesty between cops and the public, with some funny stories mixed in.

You apparently have some issues with respect and honesty and seemed to have lost your sense of humor also.

As to keeping my comments to myself, sorry Bubba! You keep showing your butt and I will be right here pointing it out! :smt075

Wow, Get away from the computer a couple days and...

Can't speak for everyone but I'm not going to be offended by anything I see or read on the internet. At least until we get some face time like at the Bash. So far everyone I've met in person off this board, even when completely different than my pre-conceptions, has been a class act.

Trust me, I've been both Barney and Andy for those of you old enough to know what that means, and it takes a few years to learn which one ultimately gets you the furthest with others.

And while I'm at it, Kevin, when did BMW punch out their ST to 1300ccs?

FM696969,

Enough with the hate speech. You came on to this board pretty strong and seemed to mellow out. Now this.

You know there are police officers posting in this thread and yet you rant and rave about hating them. You are entitled to your opinion, but be civil about it least. Do you walk up to every officer you see on the street and express your opinion to their face? Also, I don't know who the "keep your comments to yourself" thing is directed towards, but you're heading down the wrong road with that vibe.

I don't know if Doug, Mark, or Herb have sent you any email or pm's, but I'm laying this out in the open in hopes of preventing a repeat of past unpleasantries. Take some more time and get a feel for what this board is all about. People come here to relax, help us keep it that way.

Respectfully,

SitR1150R,

Feel free to stop me any time you wish. With your well-reasoned attitude, it would be worthwhile just to meet you and get acquainted. Those who might get a ticket from you should be grateful that you're giving them a ticket and not working their wreck.

Machew01,
Thanks for the kind words. When ever I stop someone, I know its a stessfull thing for them so I always do my best to make them feel at ease. Whether I cite someone or not, I feel that if they leave pissed, I have failed. They may leave unhappy at the prospect of lost money, I dont like that either, but I really dont want them pissed, it serves nothing then. I want them to understand what they did wrong and to feel they were treated fairly and with respect, not like the last cop that stopped me and a group I was riding with. All he did was piss off five of us and is now looking at a law suit by some others in my group. Lesson learned by us, absolutley nothing because everyone is just pissed. They are more focused on the way we were treated and not on the reason for the stop.

SitR,

Machew is the one on the blue bike...not the other Mike.

But I echo the comments about cooperation and demeanor. I was educated by LEO's as I grew up (legal family) and was always told to remember I didn't know what that officer had been through right before he found me nor what he thought as he approached me...putting myself in his shoes helped calm me down.

And it never hurt that I always deserved the stops I got.

I feel I deserved most of those I've gotten in the past, since I knowingly and blatantly sped. No arguments from me... my booboo. However, the current one I have on record was in the middle of nowhere while I constantly modulated the throttle while sightseeing. The cop was in a position to be nice and courteous, but as a good soldier, lacked the ability to assess prevailing circumstances and followed orders explicitly. For this I have difficulty promoting Utah tourism.
