Mounting a Givi top box to the R

Post by taosports »

Mnnden had asked me how I did this, so I thought I'd share.

Problem : The plastic BMW silver luggage rack is mostly ornamental and it's curved surface does not match with the flat Givi universal mounting plate.

Solution : A 3/8 inch thick semi-hard plastic kitchen cutting board.

Since none of the Givi rack holes line up with the rail holes of the silver BMW rack, I replaced the silver rack with a similar sized piece of semi-hard plastic kitchen cutting board, then bolted the Givi base plate to the (3/8" thick) cutting board. It makes a stronger mount than the silver plastic rack and gives a flat surface instead of a curved surface for the base plate. Works great!

BTW, credit for this idea goes to MIXR.

Thanks MIXR!

This is the cutting board which replaces the silver rack. It was easily cut with a hand saw. (I painted it black even though it really doesn't show once the Givi mounting plate is attached)

The Givi Universal mount attaches to my kitchen cutting board.

And this is how it looks...nice and clean...you'd never know a kitchen utensil was attached to the R.

Hmmm......my Givi universal plate looks different than yours.
*Is that a universal plate for Monolock luggage?

I have the Universal plate for Monokey luggage and it fits fine on top of the BMW silver rack.

Yes, it's a universal plate for the Monolock E-280

I just mounted a Givi E-250 Universal plate on my RR and it was no problem. Yes the BMW rack is slightly curved, but not that much.

Taosports - From your photo, it looks like the piece of cutting board is wider than the plastic rack. Does it fit in the rails for the plastic rack and use the same bolt holes? Perhaps a picture of the underside of the mount would help. My real question is how the cutting board can be larger than the plastic rack and still mount in between the luggage rails?

The cutting board is the same size as the BMW rack and yes, it fits in the rails and uses the same holes. It looks bigger in the photo because it's closer to the camera lens.
