I have the BMW (cheap) plastic gaurds on my dual spark 04.
They WILL fly apart on moving 'moments' over 10 km/h.
But one can be replaced for about $70 CAD. And if it saves a possible gouge to the valve cover, to me it's worth this form of skimpy protection.
Where they do make a difference, cosmetically, is the time you forget to put the side stand down. You throw a leg over to dismount, then realize the stand it not down so you help the bike to a gentle landing. In this case, I've found, they keep the easily-scratched, magnesium coating from touching the ground.
If you want real protection, go with Stanton, or crashbars.
