Ducati feels the heat from KTM 950 Supermoto & SuperDuke
Let's hope BMW is seeing this going on under their noses.....

Some nice pics to download & more info - the "super standard" motorcycle is coming back with a vengeance - I hope the R1200R is also pointed this way: light weight, great "sit-up" handling, killer brakes, and about 100hp - to GO.

I'm in trouble now!
I like that better than the friggin' 950 Supermoto I have a bloody deposit on!
For lot's of reasons, but mostly because it's air-cooled and a Ducati!!!
"Hello, Mr. KTM Dealer... Ol' Buddy, ol' Pal... How would you feel if I cancelled that order on the Supermoto 950 and got my deposit back? Hello... Hello??? Is anybody there??? Hello..."
Damn It !!!

Yeah, but...
Yeah, Collyers...
But I just *KNOW* Ducati is gonna' build that bike... Why wouldn't they?
And I do oh-so-much *LOVE* Ducati's... I have wanted another one for a long time, and even had an MH-900-E with my name and deposit on it for the longest time, 'til I got tired of waiting and sold my "slot" to a guy in Ft. Worth. I just haven't seen one that I wanted within my personal price constraints the past few years... This one most definitely draws me to it, much more than the KTM 950 Supermoto...
And it is air-cooled, which I greatly prefer.
Add to that, if it is not due for a year, it could be an advantage for me to wait. See, that way I could pull the deposit off the 950 Supermoto to wait for the Duc... and use the $$$$$$$ I had earmarked for the KTM to easily snap up a very special vintage bike I have had my eye on... and been in discussions with the current owner about!
This might actually be a blessing in disguise!
I'm going to call the KTM dealer today... No fooling!
Cheers!

Wait a minute Dallara......I have always understood you to laud bikes that not only are well designed, but also make sense and are reliable. Every single Ducati made in the last ten years that I have been around have had significant electrical problems, especially if they get wet. I know it rains in Texas at least once a year.

Darth - you may be right - competition ALWAYS improves the breed, and may the best bike wind up in my garage!! Why does all this make me think we won't see a new R1200R until March.....? Hopefully, BMW will see all this cool stuff and make the R1200R..... cooler.

I saw some pics (probably on here) of an HP-2 set up very "Motard-like" with 17" wheels, sport tires, big brakes, etc.Hopefully, BMW will see all this cool stuff and make the R1200R..... cooler.
Maybe somebody is thinking along those lines...the R1200S would be a great starting place for a BMW "HyperMotard"!

Am I the only one...
Am I the only one who has noticed that the HP-2 in the picture above looks like it has as much friggin' rake as an Orange County chopper???
Seems like it would steer awfully slow...

Yes Dallara...lotta rake...but also lottsa travel.Am I the only one who has noticed that the HP-2 in the picture above looks like it has as much friggin' rake as an Orange County chopper
As I'm sure you know..these big dirt bikes have lottsa sag so once you sit on it it looks more normal...
plus with the normal forks...they dive...so braking and turning into a corner they steepen up even more.
The bike has a little level glass (on the other side)...and a pump (on this side)...
the bike needs to be set up...using the pump (for the big air rear shock)...for different weight riders so once sitting on it the level is in the center.
Very nice...but...very expencive......bugger!

Also, the wheelbase is measure in feet, not inches, hence the ridiculous rake. Supermotard style - yes, supermotard handling - no. Probably an amazing desert racer or fire road stormer, but tight city streets or tracks? Can you say handful?

Hey, Collyers...
Hey, Collyers...
Two things.
One, the KTM dealer I had the deposit on was super-nice and said "No problem. I've got guys lined up who want 950 Supermotos..." when I asked to walk from my deal on the KTM. Said he would cut me a check and send it to me right away for the whole deposit (we'll have to see when and if it gets here...
). He's a nice guy, and a *friend-of-a-friend*, so when he asked me why I had changed my mind I told him the truth... That there was a vintage bike I wanted to buy and that I wanted to wait and see the new Ducati Hypermotard before deciding on it or the KTM. He just laughed and said "Randy (my friend) always told me you were a Ducati freak!"... But then he kind of stopped and asked me what a Ducati Hypermotard was...
He hadn't heard of the bike so he got on his computer while I was on the phone and took a look. Actually, from what he said he seemed to like it, and said that if I did get one of those I would have to bring it up and let him ride it. Of course he did have to toss in that he would have to blow my Italian doors off with a 950 Supermoto...
Anyway, it all seem to work out nicely, and I trust that he will send the check.
Second thing... I called a Ducati dealer friend of mine and asked him about the Ducati Hypermotard. He had already heard of it (of course) and was jazzed about it, too. He says that engine is the very best in the Ducati line-up, and that I would really like it. He and I used to race against each other so he knows me pretty well. I asked him if he thought they would build it and he said he was positive they would... Said Motard-type bikes are becoming a real big deal in Europe and that Ducati doesn't want to miss the boat in sales. Besides, he said it was pretty much a "parts bin" bike, with not many new parts for them to make, so it should be a good profit generator for the company since there were no real developmental costs. He also said to look carefully at the pictures and notice how "production ready" it looks, right down to details like the license plate bracket and light, sidestand switch, chain guards/guides, etc. He mentioned he would be surprised if it was not even released by next spring or summer as a 2007 model...
Then he asked if I wanted to put my name on one...
I told him the story about the KTM dealer and he laughed! He said not to worry and he would call me when he got some pricing info, but that he thought it would probably be priced right on Multistrada numbers.
Anyhow, just FYI...
Cheers!

Aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh. Now I can sleep. The 950 SM was my "second choice", because I'll never see a DOT-approved SuperDuke in Dallas County. I've always like Ducs, the Monster was almost it, the MultiStrada nearly it, but if they do start dropping these off on our side of the pond... I might have to get one to go with my EYE-talian AGV & Dainese stuff! Nice sleuthing. I feel so....... fickle. MultiStrada priced? No problemo. $10 says they make a 620 version also, for $7995...... Next summer doesn't sound so far off - & my BMW moto dealer is my local Ducati dealer, heh heh.

I know what you mean!
In a way, I feel the worst about my buddy who set me up with his Katoom dealer friend... He made all the introductions, etc. to get me geared with the KTM dealer and try to grease the wheels. I haven't told him about unwinding the 950 Supermoto deal yet.
Still, I don't feel so bad... It's not like I was getting a "super killer" deal on the KTM or anything like that, and I can probably work a better deal - discount-wise - on the Duc.
I really do love Ducati's anyway, and have been lusting after another one for a long, long time. I took a long, hard look at an ST2 before I got my R-1150-R, and it was high on my list, but something made me pass... This looks like the Ducati for me these days, and should be a lot of fun. Besides, if I had my way *ALL* motorcycles would be air-cooled, period.
A Ducati Hypermotard 620??? Now that actually makes a ton of sense, and in many ways might be the one to own if they come with one... Certainly would be less on the insurance, anyway. Could even be more fun to ride...
Naaaaaaaaaaah!
