Handle Bar Move Back 3.5", CABLES =Whats NEEDED

Post by harders »

I have a R1150r 2002, and want to move the handle bars back 3.5" for riding comfort; I plan on using FOX Pivot risers 3.5"!
Does anybody know what to expect w/ cable/hoses/wires for moving the handle bar back 3.5" or maybe 5" for full up-right seating???

I could just start figure it out but there seems to be a lot of bar adjustment experience and would like to know going in.

Thanks, Mark/Denver

that distance would need new hydraulics for definite - both sides.
You MAY be able to route all the wiring and bowden cables (throttle, fast-idle) so that they run down over the headstock and under the tank (instead of 'under' the headstock), but tbh I think there's issues with doing that - mostly to do with wires being bent too much over time.

The good news is that (most likely) you could do it all with OE parts - just buy GS parts. :)

err - because the bars are higher and pulled back further. So the cables, hoses, and wires are longer. Nothing complex.

I moved back mine some 2" to 2.5" without changing any cables/lines, with a bit of room to spare. You may want to try moving them back 3.5" before buying anything but at that distance, all bets are off.

I've fitted GS bars to my Rockster with Rox risers. All electrical cables, throttle and fast idle are fine, they just need a bit of re routing. You'll need to remove the tank as there's loads of extra wiring available, it's all bundled up with cable ties. Clutch line will need to go behind the top yoke and also needs to be run above the tank mount instead of below. Throttle and fast idle behind the top yoke as well.
I've fitted a GS clutch line simply because the Rocksters hose fouled the hand guards.....if your using after market guards or none at all you'll be fine.
Not much can be done with the brake line.....I just about managed to make it fit without the risers but it wasn't pretty....so,that's the only thing you'll need to swap out.

Yes, this sounds like a good solution! After I have completed the handle back transition, I will post a summation for all to appreciate, since getting these handle bars into a more upright sitting position seems is be a very common theme for the R & Rockstar models. Also, here in Denver a Dealer mentioned that numerous people have checked / lightly complained that bars need to come back, which were only improved w/ small risers, since most did not want to mess w/ the seemly complex mechanics of moving and possible lengthening cables/wires.
I’m thinking for my “R bar back fit”, per your fitment logic: if using 2” pivot risers and GS bars, as this will give some vertical adjustment w/ some back!
What Rox riser ______are you using?

Bought them second hand.....about 2" rise, got them tilted back a little but not much. Bare in mind I also have GS foot pegs on my bike as well.

Can you measure your GS bars and note the Cross____, Back ____ & Height ___ dimensions so I can compare w/ my r bars?

My 2002 1150R bars are Cross= 31", Back= 6.25" & Height = 2.5"
Thanks, Mark

Update: I found a Riser from 2001 Yamaha FZ1 (p/n KBA 90730 / LEH039) a 45 degree riser which provides a bar back of approx. 1.5” (from vertical ref.) and seems to fit on just fine!

However, I’m looking for about 3.5” from stock, so 2” pivot w/ GS bars might work – stay tuned. Mark
