R1150r clock wire melted wiring harness.

Post by pwmarcon »

I just purchased a 2002 non-ABS R1150R a few months ago. It runs fine but I noticed the wires to the headlight area had melted the plastic coating down to the copper wire. I removed the gas tank and saw a melted mess. Apparently the clock wire(Brown) was causing the problem. I purchased a used wiring harness and I replaced all of the melted wires except the clock wire (capped it and left it off) and spliced a couple with solder and marine shrink wrap. How do I fix the short that is causing the clock wire to melt?

Well no, I fixed all wires, and tried using a meter to see if voltage was an issue from frame, but no luck when I turn ignition on and off.

It is probably worth going through the wiring harness and giving it an inspection every year or two. I have had a few rubs and cuts that were caught before failure.

I agree! All my vinyl coverings on the wires are seriously cracking an dry rotting. This has been going on for the last two years. I got rid of the overly tight zip ties a long time ago. I have been wrapping them in electrical tape although I'm sure there is something better to use.

I used the ribbed plastic cable covers from Auto Zone. They work great.
