WTF - Expired battery installation (!!!) - Wild West BMW

Post by bahill »

Riding through Texas 12/11 my battery went dead.

Got the bike to Wild West in Katy had the shop replace it, was on my way.

This month was riding in Southern CA, and battery went dead.

The guy I got to replace it on the road - Valdi at BMW Motozone in Torrance (really great mechanic, great guy, great shop btw!!!) - pulled the old one and showed me that Wild West had installed an expired battery in Dec 11.  :x :x

The battery was stamped 12/05 manufacture date, with expiration date in '11 and having no recharge stamp.

I called Dan at Wild West who, after an extremely testy exchange that resulted in me having to threaten to call BMW Motoradd NA, agreed to send me a new battery if I would send the old one back to him.

I sent the old one back ($30 shipping costs) and am waiting for Dan to send the new one.

I also contacted BMW Motoradd to open a case with them in case something goes wrong again.

Im irked about it, cost me a day on the road, at least $30 bucks, some aggravation, and couldnt be more surprised that it seems that a BMW service department would try to pull a fast one like this. Maybe it was the out of state plates!! Or the fact that they arent primarily a BMW shop?

BTW the battery that I originally replaced in the bike happened to have been a replacement battery that the previous owner had Wild West install only 14 months prior (before I bought it). Hmm....

Will see if I get the replacement battery as promised, and post the result! Whats a guy to do, insist on checking stamps on those dealer battery installs when on the road?? (or at least maybe when going through Katy TX)

WOW, wouldn't think a reputable shop pulling that kind of crap.
