kick stand pivoting a R1200R

My buddy does that every time. I did it couple of times to my older bike but not R1200R. Don't even want to try. It just doesn't look right to me. By the way his bike has a cast iron kickstand. R1200R is steel.

a young lady i know has a f800 and claimed she pivoted her bike often because she is height challenged....

I have performed a pivot on the Center Stand on my R12R occasionally. Seems to be work OK.

You're applying forces in excess of what the stands were designed for, from directions where they aren't expected.

There have been a few reports of the centerstand bolts failing, or coming unscrewed. I suspect this may be due to people riding off the stand, but doing bike pivots with either stand is going to put forces on parts that weren't designed with those forces in mind.

In other words - do it at your own risk (and be prepared to catch the bike if/when the stand or mounting bolt breaks.)

Come on Don ... Let'em play with their bikes! It is like the toddlers and the stove. You can tell'em a gazillion times that thing is hot but they'll learn only from burning their fingers.

Not only is Don's comment accurate, but why bother to spin the bike? Not once can I remember needing or wanting to spin a bike for any reason.

You have obviously never parked in a college motorcycle lot at prime time. At least a partial sidestand spin is a useful skill to know to get yourself out when you have been "parked in".

Amen! If you are not careful, this is VERY easy to do. It happened to me just the other day. I don't use the center stand to pivot, however, it is frustrating when it would make life easier.

That the second reason I always park at the outside edge of any parking space I pull into..

1. So cars don't think the space is empty, and pull in knocking the bike over (seen that one happen..)
2. So I can't get parked-in. If people want to park ahead of me at the back end of the space, fine.. but where I'm usually parked they'd have to park in the traffic isle to block me in.

I remember test riding a BM about 40 years ago(!), and the dealer showed me how you could spin it around by tilting it onto one side of the centre stand. Apparently a designed in feature. With subsequent ownership it was a feature I found useful on numerous occasions.

The stand design on these bikes was different, having legs shaped like a reversed 'J' and no lug to lower the stand with. On my current R1200R it is mainly this lug which prevents one spinning it!

In my garage(which is atop a steepish slope) I have a small turntable which the centre stand sits on. This enables me to turn the bike in its own length, thus exiting garage forwards and safely! My number one accessory!

I tried it. R1200R is too heavy for me to mess with. One reason I ditched the RT, bigger and heavier yet.
