ESA question

Post by jrvip1 »

I was under the impression that ESA only adjusted the rear suspension but I read somewhere that it changed both front and rear. What is correct?

The different settings are very subtle but quite noticeable when chucking it around country lanes in sport mode where when coming into contact with uneven surfaces and rutts, it can buck around quite a bit and it can be a challenge sometimes to keep it glued to the road. Adds to the fun factor I suppose

from what I can see in this diagram, it appears to adjust a lot more than just the rear shock... but I'm not sure.

This is the schematic I saw as well. However, there is no control valve on the front suspension so it only seems to be on the rear one. All the other devices are just sensors.

With ESA you can adjust the preload on the rear suspension(for pillion, luggage, etc). You can only do this with bike stationary and the engine running(you feel the atitude of the machine change).
Also you can adjust the damping on front and rear suspension - comfort, normal and sport. This can be changed on the move and difference is subtle but noticable.
On non ESA machines only rear damping is adjustable.
(not sure but some people refer to 'dampers' as 'shock absorbers').

On non ESA bikes both the rear preload and damping are manually adjustable. I don't think there is a front adjustment.

The schematic diagram refers to a new 'dynamic' system which senses riding/road conditions and adjusts suspension accordingly. It is not the current ESA system
