Re: Just got new shocks
I had the opportunity to ride 2 R1200Rs back to back first with stock with about 4K on the clock and then the R with Ohlins and almost 2k miles. WOW what a difference they smoothed out the bumps yet still provided better performance I know very subjective, but, at the time (18 mos.) prior to deciding to move on from my Fat Boy so I really did not have a dog in the race. Well, that is what I told my wife that the Ohlins really enhanced safety and for $965
they were a great deal as was the Wunderlich trophy fairing for only
$300. Must admit that I'm sure I would not be able to tell the difference among any of the high-end aftermarket shocks. Oh, and I went DIY and it took nearly 4 hours as I dropped the washer on front-end and somehow a naked bike swallowed it as well as 3rd washer good thing I bought 4 of them. So with the great deal on price and DIY install they were practically free or so I tried to convince my wife.
This was going to be my low-cost bike but with the suspension, fairing, CF bugger, Tourtech paniers, etc. It would have been much cheaper to buy an RT and at the rate I'm going maybe a KGT.

Klaus is away at the moment in Indonesia.. I think he's back this week. I'll point out to him that apparently when he's away the office staff isn't as attentive as they might be.angellr wrote:I am leaning towards the Wilbers, as I cannot get ANYONE to return my inquiries from Hyperpro (Don, I know you swear by these).

Thanks Don. As an FYI, did hear back from him a couple of days ago and will be making up my mind shortly. Trying to decide whether I want to pump another $2K into the '07 (with 46K miles) or perhaps start saving for a new one and pull the trigger sometime early next year (maybe left over 2011).deilenberger wrote:Klaus is away at the moment in Indonesia.. I've been racing through Deals Gap for going on two decades now. I'd just like to make a point you may already be aware of.PrinceBooger wrote:

In the picture above you may indeed have something amiss; lucky you didn't hit a hard part and go down. However, many of the curves at the Gap drop in elevation rapidly and some are even slightly banked. This will use up your suspension and leave you looking as in the picture above. Heck ! I've scrapped the headers on an SV650 due to using up it's suspension through the Gap.
Anyone wanting go through the Gap at any fast pace clip should jack up the suspension to the point of becoming uncomfortable. If you plan to break any records you'll need a racing setup that gets into the <20 mm of sag area and is very rough for road riding.
Just my 2 cents.....

Wilbers Shocks
I sent an e-mail to The Beemer Shop yesterday morning requesting information on the Wilbers Shocks. Later that afternoon I received a call from owner, Ted Porter. All I can say is WOW! It's so refreshing to speak to someone so pleasant and knowledgeable. He provided a very objective comparison of all the major shock companies and I'm definitely committed to replacing my OEM shocks with Wilbers from The Beemer Shop!

Thank you for your kind comments, Bruce! I hope you've been enjoying your new R1200R. I'm looking forward to enjoying the next two months of riding in New England.

Re: Just got new shocks
My BMW shop said a lot people wait until their stock shocks wear out to upgrade. Anyone know how long takes these babies to wear out? I wonder how much difference gets credited to not knowing original shocks already need replacing.
Turns out the labor is a fraction of the cost of the shocks. Does anyone know any good sources online? Seems like they cost the same everywhere, including my dealer.

Mike,
I will be visiting the Beemer Shop next week. How many hours did it take? I wanted to rent a car and drive to Santa Cruz for a bite, then visit my son at UCSC.

Re: Just got new shocks
They began rolling bikes out at about 9:30, took my bike in a little after 10, and gave me the bike back between 11:30 and noon. I had phoned them previously to ask if they could start me early due to the long ride home, and they made a note of it. They are friendly and flexible folks, so just tell 'em what you need.
