SW Motech Bars on a 2011 R1200R

Post by diplosmack »

Hi guys,

Brand new here, picking up my dream bike here in about a week. I can't begin to tell you the anticipation I'm feeling. Also, had a quick quick question regarding SW Motech Crash Bars on a 2011. With the new model (thought it's not much different than previous years), will the Motech bars fit on a 2011 R1200r?

I recall their website stating that they would fit an 07-10, now they say 07-. I wanted to see if anybody has any firsthand knowledge of installing them on a 11' before I took the plunge and ordered them.

Thanks in advance,

D

Welcome to our board!

I assume they should fit your bike as well but I suggest you contact them directly and ask.

I tried two pairs of the Motech crash bars and neither would fit. The first step in their instructions tells you to place the top tube over an engine bolt. It wont go, there must be a slight change in size on the 11. I checked agAIN WITH tWISTED tHROTTLE AND THEY SHOW NO UPDATES I followed up with Wunderlich and Hepco-Becker, both confirmeed that the the crash guards needed to be reengineered to fit the 11. I have a pair coming from H-B next week and will let you know how they work out.
There also are some changes to the front end so that it is difficult to find a windshield, again the aftermarket mfrs have not updated their products for the 2011's.

Last night I posted a message saying that the SW Motech bars had failed to prevent dinging the left valve cover when I dropped the bike in my driveway. After touching up the paint on the bar, I checked with a board and found that there was no way the cover hit the pavement. The dings I saw must have happened when the previous owner dropped the bike. Mea stupida. The Motech bar did its job just fine.

I mounted the Hepco-Becker crash bars on my 2011. They fit just fine and look good, not obtrusive. Hope they do their job if it ever becomes necessary

I have the Hepco-Becker crash guards from A&S BMW (http://www.ascycles.com/detail.aspx?ID=47656). and I don't recommend them. I tipped my bike over on the smooth garage floor (I was on the lawn tractor at the time) and the valve cover got scraped up. I called A&S and asked what the point of the crash guards was if they don't even protect the valve covers in a zero-speed tip over. The guy said that wasn't their purpose; they are intended to protect the cylinders in a more serious crash.

I can report the same thing about the BMW crash bars. The look I like, but, after installing them I leaned the bike over and the one touching the floor is valve cover. The clearence between the bar and the floor at that position is less then a millimeter, but anyhow, would not expect to see something like this.

I guess we have to look for cylinder head covers to go with it

probably yes, but one of the reasons for me for installing the crash bars was to to not use the head covers.

I bought cylinder head protection from GEICO.

Only an extra $35 a year for zero deductible collision and comprehensive. Peace of mind...

If I crash hard enough to actually damage those covers, I've probably got a bigger claim than just the covers. I did briefly touch one cover down on a descending-radius curve that caught me by surprise. Didn't even feel it hit; only noticed it when I got home. Brake lever got ground down pretty good, too.

Filled and sanded the scratch in the valve cover and hit with matching silver engine paint. Can't even see the mark unless you get down on your knees and look real close.

I now have the plastic valve cover protectors on the bike that I kept from my old GS. Those have been filled and painted more than once since I dropped the GS about 15 times.

This is outstanding news! I've been waiting for them to become available for the 2011 model. I'm a fan of Hepcko and Becker crash bars. Had them on a couple of my GS's and had no complaints. I totalled a 2007 R1200GS and about the only thing that survived unscathed was the cylinders and engine.
