Cleaning Granite Gray?

Post by JohnM »

DonE graciously invited me over to his house this AM to assist w/ the installation of an Ohlins front shock on my R12R. (Thanks again, Don!)

While I was there, I asked if he knew the best way to clean my granite gray gas tank. Being that he has a black R12R, he couldn't offer a suggestion. So I'll raise the question here.

I'm currently using Simple Green, although I occasionally have to go over it again with a microfiber to remove residual streaks.

Thoughts anyone?

BTW, BMWNA released a Limited Edition M3 last year, in Gray Matte paint. The new owners reportedly were required to sign an agreement that they had been advised on the required methods for caring for the matte paint. Failure to follow said procedures supposedly
could result in the denial of a paint-related warranty claim.

Here's what I do. On Saturday morning I get a special old bath towel out of the back room. I shower as normal. I take the damp towel outside and wipe off the dust, pollen, etc., from the painted bits and cases. That's clean enough for me.

I almost hate to utter this here but: HD makes a cleaner specifically formulated for their "denim" paints. In case you're not familiar, they are a semi flat hue/chroma of paint not dissimilar from the Granite Gray. Might be worth a trip to the Pirate Pavillion

I use the HD sunwash concentrate. I hate buying dealer stuff, but it works the best. Haven't tried the denim stuff though. Tried others that haven't worked that well and just decided to keep with the HD stuff.

Spray-on Car Wash from Griot's Garage and a microfiber towel works well for me.

I sure hell wouldn't use Simple Green it is WAY, WAY too strong a detergent.. Stick with a good car washing soap that has the correct Ph for automotive paints. For day to day cleaning use a light detailer like Meguiars quick detailer and a micro fiber cloth.
