System Case Heat Shield-Prototype

Ok, since the Mistress won’t be leaving the hanger for another week or so, I gave home fabrication a whirl.

I have not experienced any ‘heat’ related issues, but I will say that I do not put my lunch bag in the left case as it can get warm.

It took about two hours work from a scratch idea, minus the overnight paint dry. Here’s what I used:
1. Galvanized sheet metal
2. Paper and pencil for drawing up the template
3. Spray paint. For obvious reasons I did not go with black; what was lying around and durable was a can of Rustoleum Hammer Coat Silver.
4. Tools: Tin snips, metal hole puncher, sandpaper to take down the razor edges.

The shield is fitted under the hinge screws (re-added the Locktite from RR item #476) and opposite side tabs are screwed into the rubber bumper.

I’m guessing that the shield is defensive layer one and will cause the heat to roll away from the case. There is a bit of an air gap between the shield and the case which should aid the effect.

I leave it to better hands to craft a MKII with a better curve and such.

Best part is it cost me $0.00, #482 is off the list and if for some reason it fails to serve the purpose, I can remove it easily.

Thanks guys. I got home today and put a roll in the shield to conform to the case bottom.

I'm not sure it's even necessary and I have not seen posts of 'melting' cases. It was on the MAXBMW parts list film but noted as "N/A" and I have not actually seen an OEM one fitted.

Should it become an issue for our RR's, I've broken some ground for a quick DIY project.

It's a nice thing, but based on my experience, perhaps unneeded. I have 45k on my bags, which are never off the bike, and when travelling WAY overloaded. No sign of bottom meltdown (can't say that about the bags on the RS that the R12R replaced..) I think it's a non-issue. We have an inch+ of space between the exhaust and bag - so as long as they don't touch, the transfer of heat is minimal.

As long as we're moving, there should be enough air flowing past the bag to make it a real non-issue. Our mufflers don't run particularly hot, I've accidently touched mine after riding some distance and didn't come away with a blister (but I don't suggest YOU try this, if you do and you catch fire and explode - you were warned not to.. )

But - it's a nice winter project and helps make your bike a bit unique.. so go at it..!

It does look like a good job you have done there but .....I have not found it necessary in 30,000 miles with my bags on. It was a different story on the old K1200RS.
No heat problems on the R1200R.
