Helmet lock

Post by FredRydr »

If you want a helmet lock keyed to your bike the same as an R1100R and R1150R, you can do so.

Buy a used R1100R or R1150R helmet lock. They were used on other period models as well. The R1100R lock is more compact, because the R1150R lock did double-duty as a seat lock, too. With a small flat-bladed screwdriver, pry the back off. Discard the cable from the R1150R lock. Note the position of the spring, lift it out and set it aside. If the original lock cylinder is still in place, insert the original old-style key. Then press the one protruding tab back into the cylinder, and draw out the key and cylinder. Keep the key in the cylinder, wrap a bit of tape around the cylinder to keep the tabs in place, and try to find someone to give it away to. With the modern key in your new cylinder, slide the cylinder into the lock housing until the last tab pops up to hold it all in place. Re-install the spring and the back cover. Get one of those stainless-steel clamps found on BMW frames (lots on R1100/1150GSes), and run a bolt with locknut through the lock and clamp. Install it on your R1200R in about the same spot as the original location on the R1100/1150R.
