f800gs mirrors for the r1200r

Post by sunny72 »

Sorry for the repeat topic but I searched in vain for a definitive answer...

Will the OEM f800gs mirrors fit on the R1200R?
If so, do I need to buy the f800gs clamp as well?
Anybody have a picture of an R with the F mirrors?

I saw a thread about people muscling the incompatible threads... I'm too much of a pansy for that. But, it seemed like maybe with the new clamp purchased it might work?

Thanks, the forum is really helping my new ownership of this bike. I really appreciate it.

YES, the OEM F fit the R. No need for the clamp, have same threading. It took all of 10 minutes for me to make the switch ... once I found the right wrench.

Believe I paid $60 a piece.

I installed them on my 2010 R1200R with ease on the stock clamps.

If you don't just love them, I'll buy them from you as spares. They look better, and they work better, than the stock "Mickey Mouse ear" mirrors. But when it comes to "clamps", I would say to buy the clamps and rubber covering specific for the F800GS mirrors, as they clamp down in a different (and much better) way. Better safe than sorry...

I just bought a pair this past week to replace the stockers.

The original mirrors on my RR were threaded into the base of the mount with a locking nut...not smooth like the GS mirror base.

The new GS mirrors came with different hardware, threaded into the mount and smooth pinch clamp to hold the mirror,(I'll assume that this used to be original set-up on the RR) works very slick.

Was told that the GS mirrors were no longer available without the hardware, glad the mirrors included the pinch locks,or they would not have worked for my bike anyway.

RT-Mike is correct in that the F800GS mirrors have pinch-locks, while the R1200R mirrors work by opposing two nuts in different directions. The F800 system is much better, in my opinion. You can set them loose or tight, move them by hand while riding, where the old mirrors would break loose completely and fold back, requiring you to stop and use a wrench (remembering which way to turn each thread). The new F800 system is MUCH superior, so get the mirrors plus the hardware (and the little rubber boots, which are also different).

For anyone in the UK, I've just bought a pair from ebay here 180539040524. Only £40 and includes the fittings. I have no association with the seller.

I like those, but Procycle here had a two-for-one on the chrome oval mirrors to suit my over-farkelled baby.

The handguards are Barkbusters Storm and are easy to mount with the clamps on the handlebar. They come with clear installation instructions. I got them at Twisted Throttle. The "cruise control" is a Kaoko throttle lock also from Twisted Throttle. Very simple install, just remove the bar end and replace with the Kaoko setup.

Say RadRider....I can see from your pictures that the handgaurd bracket doesn't seem to have interfered with your front brake fluid resevoir (correct me if I'm wrong), but I couldn't see if it interfered with your clutch resevoir. Are these two resevoirs stock and in the stock positions. Any interference ?

I think they look great on your bike BTW.....appreciate your help.

I have the exact same setup of mirrors and handguards. Everything installs easily, and you'll just love it. Guaranteed!

Installation is fairly simple and in no way interferes with the brake or clutch reservoirs. These are not modified in any way, just install the clamps onto the bars next to the reservoirs. The handguards do touch the windscreen as it has the tilt back modification.

I just ordered a set of the Storms from Twisted Throttle yesterday. They had them in stock and they already shipped, I should have them Tuesday. I price shopped for about 1/2 an hour and couldn't find them cheaper anywhere.

Hand protector alternatives

Post by Caroanbill »

There are also clear or smoke polycarbonate hand protectors from Wunderlich - mount to the mirror mount, a bit better coverage than the barkbusters. Clear handguards PN 8600346 - can't get the link to come up so I've bumped the almost-a-fairing thread instead.

I have these hand proctectors through a fewq\ miserable late Aussie winter wet days, and they have been great - I find the closed-ended handguards a bit worrisome (yeah yeah, I'm just like that) and these finsh well away from the 'bars. They do't interfere with my Kaoko throttle lock either. Plus black would look odd on my Crystal Grey R12R - the clear is invisible once I get the dead critters off it!
