Shifting hard

Post by Michael Hart »

My bike has been shifting hard since shortly after my 6000 mile service.(2009 fastest color white)
I noticed at first felt like I wasn't pulling the clutch in fast enough. But paying close attention to when I shift
I no thats not the case. anyone else experience this. :-k

Need a better description of "hard"..

Question - was the transmission oil changed at the 6,000 mile service? (It isn't called for..) If so - what was used?

That's about the only thing that might change things related to a service.

Or, did someone mess with the shift linkage? (http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/ ... d=03192010)

Does the shift lever feel like it's in the same place, or as if it was moved?

Good roads,

It feels like the clutch isn't fully engaging, its not physically hard but I can feel it almost like i am not pulling in the clutch,

So you mean the clutch is not disengaging and letting go when you pull the lever. I suspect your lever or cable was "adjusted" and that they got it wrong. Could also be a hydraulic failure. On my old Subaru, the same symptoms came from a failed clutch master cylinder. Get it checked & you'll have to mostly powershift meanwhile. If you smell burning, don't ride :-)

Why screw around. Bring it back to the people who did the service and have them correct it.

Hm. Could be air in the line or a low level in the reservoir, or (as someone else already mentioned) somebody moved the lever.

Does your service record indicate they changed or bled the brake &/or clutch fluids? If so, there's a smoking gun.

No cable on an R1200R - it's hydraulic with mineral oil in it...

It might be worth searching a bit. Cy Young (hi Cy - are you here?) had a problem with his clutch disappearing on his fairly new R12R. The slave cylinder was replaced with a new design one, but that didn't fix the problem. What did fix it was re-routing the bottom hydraulic hose to the slave cylinder. Was in an SIB for the GS model - but he had a smart dealer who tried it on his, and it seemed to work.

I'd still be curious if the work order listed new transmission oil - and if so, the PN or description of it.

If you didn't have this problem before the bike was serviced, wouldn't you think that maybe just there is a slite chance they may have made a wrong adjustment.
Me personally would have picked this up immidiately and would have turned around that quick and road it straight back.
