Turned R1200R into a modern R90S...

Post by Boxer-Lust »

Not excactly but pretty close.I always liked the R90S - R100CS.Sportbikes of their times that won even superbike races and could also be ridden with gear dry and secure in hardbags and practical goodies like rack and centerstand and comfortable enough to take a passenger.True Sport-tourers :!: The only problem back then I was a child.Later I bought a R1100S the closest thing to make those childhood dreams come true.Had a lot of fun on that bike.
Unfortunately BMW never upgraded the bike by putting the much stronger and smoother 1200 boxer engine into the R1100S.
The new R1200S unfortunately lacked the practical abilities of the former S bikes that made it less attractive for a lot of riders.
Don't ask how I know...
Anyways the R1200R was the closest option to replace R1100S.Being naked and more upright I had my reservations when it came to wind protection and not as sporty due to the more upright riding position.I liked everything about the R except for it's lack of fairing/looks.I tried a few windshields linking the tinted BMW Sports-screen the best for the lack of buffeting, looks and wind protection that worked pretty good up to for the US at least prudent speeds of 85mph...
But I was still missing the looks of the R1100S.
I put a LSL LM1 bar on it that sits as low as possible with out hitting the tank and finally the Wunderlich Trophy fairing. Not excactly cheap and the paint quality could be a little better for the price and a rubber gasket part of the package to prevent the headlight to reflect inside the fairing riding at night.Otherwise I love the looks of the now R1200R-S... ;)
The fairing itself works pretty good, too. No buffeting, helmet, arms in clean air.
Is it worth the money :?: Possibly...
 For someone wanting a tinted BMW sport-shield complete with mountingbracket/bolts/
instructions used for a couple thousand miles;you can have mine for 50% off :!:

Just use your cel phone camera and upload to a free photobucket account.

I don't think you can even GET a cel phone without a camera in it these days...

Boxer-lust, we must think alike. Just finished installing my Trophy fairing and everytime I walk by the bike it reminds me of my '84 R100S. You know, the bike I never should have sold. Yes, the fairing was rediculously expensive, but I've missed that S since '94. The price was worth it to me. For some reason I now feel complete :D

Just to make everyone feel a little ill: I bought the S new for $4,800 and sold it ten years later for $3,500. Wonder if our R's will hold their value the same way?

Sorry no kids around to post pictures,as I'm still one myself...
Dave-AZ;My dreambike(s) from my childhood days were the R100CS in black and the Moto Guzzi LeMans3...Both from around 1981...
Now with the Wunderlich-S fairing I finally start to like the R1200R as much as my former R1100S :!: The bike is great, just the looks never did much for me...Until now.Now all that is missing is a set of GS wire wheels but in 17 inch sizes...
Google "BMW R120CS" :!: :!:
Hopefully BMW puts that bike into reality as a going away present to celebrate 90 years of aircooled boxers when the new generation of watercooled boxers hit the showrooms in 2-3 years... :!:

Things must be slowing down - last time I heard the watercooled boxer rumor it was next year (2011..)

What is this " LSL LM1" handle bar? Where can I get one?

I tried the F800ST bar (2" narrower, 2' lower) to get a more sporty position, but could not avoid it hitting the bulbous tank and honking the horn without two layers of risers, kinda ruining benefit. Eventually put the stock bar back on, with one riser, which makes the bike quite comfortable for touring (just got back from an 8-day, 2-up ride to Nova Scotia, and it suffered no significant discomfort in the upper body, other than an aching throttle arm).

Its a Sport touring bar for BMW motorcycles with heated grips. The ends are threaded for BMW weights.

Here's what it looks like:

That is the bar.It is a steel bar painted in the same finish as the R1200R triple clamp.
Works with stock clamps and BMW bar end weights.
You can get in from spieglerusa...
