BMW recalls over 15,000 motorcycles - Autoblog

Post by spoonyfork »

Not news, but this showed up in my feed this morning... along with IMs and emails from all my friends and co-workers that know I own an R1200R. My 2008 is in the recall. Good thing I have my 12,000 service coming up in 2 weeks.

Will they contact if it involves my bike. I purchased mine in St Louis and the local dealer does not like me for that. Just curious!!

BMW / R 1200 ST 2007

NHTSA CAMPAIGN ID Number: 10V276000 NHTSA Action Number: N/A

Potential Number of Units Affected: 15,532

Summary
BMW IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007 THROUGH 2009 R 1200 AND K 1200 SERIES MOTORCYCLES MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 2006 THROUGH MAY 2009. DUE TO THE CURRENT ROUTING OF THE FRONT BRAKE LINES, IT IS POSSIBLE THAT DURING RIDING, AND THEREFORE ASSOCIATED VIBRATION. THE BRAKE LINES COULD BE UNDER STRAIN. IF THE VIBRATION/STRAIN IS SIGNIFICANT, THE BRAKE LINE COULD SPLIT AND START TO DEVELOP A LEAK.

Remedy
BMW WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND DEALERS WILL INSTALL NEW BRAKE LINES, CONTAINING A "SLEEVE" ALONG A PORTION OF THE LINES FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JULY 2010. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BMW AT 1-800-525-7417.

They usually do contact you by sending a letter.
Since I am impatient I emailed BMWNA ([email protected]) and was told to contact my dealer.

I just got a from my dealer this morning telling me that my 2009 R1200R has been recalled concerning the brake line thingie. They said once they get the parts in, they will give me another call to schedule an appointment.

I think one of the Chinese, Japanese or Korean bike manufacturing companies should do a copy of the R1200R.

That means we could all ride the bike we love, it would be more reasonably priced and most importantly, it would be reliable.

Fixed that for'ya..

Certainly Toyota is an object lesson recently on achieving perfection - not. And a Chinese copy? Only if manufactured with BMW QC engineers on site (which is how the BMW Chinese engine factory is run..) At least they wouldn't have to concern themselves with safe working conditions, or environmental concerns.

Thanks for the heads up. Just called and gave my VIN, it appears I am one of the unlucky who are being recalled. They said I should be getting a letter from BMW but I called and got my appointment anyway.

Does "installing new brake lines" include a brake fluid flush?

It will for the front circuit - where the lines are being replaced... back - not so much.

Had mine done today. New front brake lines, fluid, flush, no cost. I liked that they didn't even try to sell me anything else, such as a complete flush. However, although I had an appointment I didn't get the bike until 6 hours later. I think they started late. Greensboro BMW seems to be a very friendly dealer ship. They are going to see me again.

I had an F800GS for that time. Nifty bike, but noticeably weaker and buzzier than the Roadster. Can't beat 60+mpg though (according to OBC).

I never received a notification that my R1200R was under the recall. I asked BMW Motorcycles of Detroit to check when I was in for my 12,000 mile service last Friday. My VIN was under the recall so they performed the repair action. Here's the itemized list from the receipt:

Part number Qty Description
34327722287 1 REPAIR KIT FOR BRAKE LINES
34327715811 1 BRAKE HOSE
34117671550 4 GASKET RING
34327715809 1 CONNECTION ELEMENT
07129904819 1 TORX-BOLT WITH WASHER
32737687119 1 TENSION STRAP

As long as they're going to be opening things up, I'll have the dealer install a longer line to accommodate handlebar risers.

Just wondering if most people are receiving letters regarding the recall.

Anyone in Canada get one yet? I'm still waiting to hear from BMW.

I never got one in the US. After reading online that the recall was official now I emailed BMWNA to verify, and they told me to contact the dealer. It should be enough if you just approach your dealer, provide your VIN, and they should be able to see on their computer if your bike is part of the recall.

I went in to the dealer and asked about this (2009 model), they searched the VIN and mine is on the waiting list for parts. No letter from the fatherland as of yet...

Peter

*edit* spoke too soon, the letter has arrived...
