BMW Topcase 28L (and 49L) compatability

Yo guys,

Does anyone know if the 28L topcase for an R1200RT will fit on the R1200R with the factory BMW side rails and top plate? My guess is that it will. The part numbers are the same as found on the parts fiche's such as MaxBMW but I don't want to guess and end up with another paperweight.

Same question regarding the 49L as the 28L does look a bit smalll. I'm kind of stuck with the BMW setup as my new to me bike came configured with the BMW gear and I don't want to buy myself into another brand.

The RT luggage is identical to the RR version. I have both cases, and they work fine. The large case will take two helmets or a lot of stuff. Small case works with one helmet, and not so much stuff. The side cases hold a lot of stuff, and work better with liners to keep the stuff from falling out when you open them.

Thanks for the info and the pics. The 49L looks a bit too big on the R12 IMO. I had a 40L H&B on the R1150R which was just about right (even a little large looking). I think I'll go for the 28L and deal with the smallish size.

I have the smaller case and love it. It fits the look of the bike and holds everything I need.

One thing you might want to consider:

I ended up with the large case because my Boss Lady did not like the seating position of the small case. My gripe with it is that when we ride 2-up with the small case, Judy is shoved more forward into me, which shoves me forward into the tank and is an awkward riding position for any length of time.

The large case is better for both of us when 2-up. Judy loves the nice wide backrest that fits better and she can sit back a bit. I love it because she is not shoved into me, and I ride in the normal position I am in when solo.

I would suggest that if you intend any 2-up riding on the RR, the large case is the better choice. Besides, you can truly say you have an "RT-Lite" Right now, we are having 95 degree heat, with heat indexes in the 110-119 range daily. I taught a Riders Edge class this past Wednesday and Thursday in that heat and then rode home (45 minute run) with the mesh gear (Hi-Vis Motoport Airmesh II Kevlar) on and the air circulation on the bike was quite comfortable. The RT, as great a bike as it is, is a miserably uncomfortable machine in these conditions because the wind protection is so good. The RR simply rocks for hot weather riding

The side cases will not touch before any hard parts. Get the rubber scrape guards for them. Cheap insurance in case of a tipover !
