BMW soft luggage a tough cookie

Post by Rocket »

Bought one of the BMW carrying cases (fits rear rack) and it saved my bike last week when the bike toppled over into the side wall of a Ferry (during a 3 day tour of Scotland). The pilot hit the docking point too hard causing everything to move.
The soft case took the weight of the bike as it fell against the side wall of the Ferry and prevented it falling over completely. The rubberised moulded bottom of the case cushioned the impact until I managed to lift the bike back onto its stand.

All 4 plastic clips also held. Was amazed.

Obviously lucky the bike was close to the side wall of the Ferry and nothing else fouled on the boats structure. Real impressed with the strength of this rear bag. Can recommend this item.

Moral of this story - Avoid parking on a sloping floor on Ferries , even if thats where the attendant wants you to park!

About to leave for Scotland ...
(note quick release clips at base of bag. It also has a fully waterproof liner, handy top pouch and carrying strap. Also expandable. )

Glad to hear that nothing worse happened! Though out of interest...whose responsibility is it if the bike would have crashed over? In case of a damage would it have been you who would have had to pay for it or is there some kind of insurance?

Not sure Stef. Think there is some kind of disclaimer by the ferry companies that they accept no responsibility for damage to vehicles. If so, it would be my own insurance. The only actual damage was to my brand new helmet which dropped on the floor and sustained slight scratch.
Seem to remember being told once that helmets should be scrapped if they sustain a sharp knock like this. Need to check.

Was your bike strapped down? I recently crossed the Channel on a ferry from Calais, France to Dover, England & back and they provided cargo straps with a pad to strap your bike down. It seemed very secure, but we were still worried. Glad your beautiful R12R didn't get damaged!

one thing to do is make sure the bike is in gear on the ferry.

It probably helped in this case but it's interesting that you use all 4 straps. I just use the two in the front and hook the sheath under the rack in the rear.

Very glad it didn't come out worse for you.
