Farkles Help Needed!

Post by MrChicken »

Hi all,

I was hoping someone could quickly check something on their bike for me.

I recently ordered some farkles (F800GS mirrors, swingarm pivot covers, carbon fibre heel guard) and they have been arriving over the last few weeks.

I have two problems:

First, is that I reckon the wrong swingarm covers have been delivered because they don’t tally with the Wunderlich catalogue part numbers.

Second, is that I can’t check them on the bike because it’s in the workshop after a minor bike vs. car incident. (It’s been agonising having farkles arrive but no bike to stick them on).

Anyhoo, can someone quickly let me know the diameter of the swingarm pivot cavity on their bike so I can check it against the covers? I presume both sides are the same?

Thanks a million
Geoff

The two sides are different, and one side already has a plastic cover in it.. so dunno what the diameter on that side is. The other side IS a different diameter then the GS swingarm pivot (I know this 'cause I'd bought a GS cover and it won't fit the R12R..) Let me go measure it..

OK, ID of the right side one (the side without the cover) is almost exactly 2".. mebbe 2.05". Looks like 51mm if you think in metric. And ~1/16-hands if you think in horse (OK - I did just make that up.. :) )

HTH,
You have to be careful, Don. You have so much cred here that people believe anything you say without hesitation. I actually started to believe that black paint with white pinstripes attracted women.

Thanks Don, that's a big help.

I've been sent two different sized covers, which I wasn't expecting in the first place. Although it's a bit hard to see without taking them out of the shrink-wrap, one looks to have a thread diameter of about 51mm, so that could be about right for the RHS cover. The other one is quite a bit smaller at about 44mm. Do you reckon that's close to the LHS which already has the plastic cover? (I know it's hard to tell with the plastic cover in place). If it's in the ballpark, I might hold off returning the cover until I get the bike back and I can check for myself.

The bike is still two weeks away. Would you believe the workshop called this afternoon to tell me they had scratched the tank when remounting it and it has to go back for a respray. The bike would have been ready otherwise ...

Geoff,

Ah... sorry, unfortunately, I was toodling off to bed right after I wrote that, and I didn't bring the bike to work today (rain.. and the gym this afternoon..) The left side one is smaller - dunno how much, but it's smaller.

These are threaded? Most I've seen had a press fit with an O ring used for snugness (is that a word? - Is now.. :) )

Hmmm... respray opens possibilities for customization..

Thanks Don. Now that I look a bit closer, the covers aren't threaded. There is an o-ring for that snugness you mentioned! Interestingly, the smaller cover is labelled as suiting the R1200 GS/ST/S. Nothing about the R12R, but maybe it fits. I'll have to wait and see.

Cheers

Hey Geoff, so sorry to hear about your bingle -hope you are OK- if you still need to check the covers or anything else just ring and drop by - as you know I have the covers on my bike but I think they are hornig not wunderlich- but they are easy to pop off to compare if need be.

I guess you have answered my question about a possible ride tomorrow...damn
