Torx Wrenches

Post by AncientMariner »

I need to get some for the new bike. Should I get regular Torx, or Tamper Proof Torx, which claim that they will work on regular Torx? Can anyone tell me what sizes I'm likely to need? My search on this subject informs me that I don't need any external torx sockets, right? :-k

Visit Harbor Freight. They have a small ratching wrench with security bits - which include the smaller torx sizes for about $3.00. Also look for one of the screwdriver type drivers that use these bits. Then look for the bigger Torx - you need from T15-T50 to cover everything on the bike.

There are a few external torx used (like on the shift lever) - a 12 point wrench in the right size will work on those.

There is no need to get tamper proof Torx bits unless you also want to break into pay phones or something in your spare time. I use a set of Harbor Freight Torx bits that fit 1/4" and 3/8" drives plus a set of Chapman type bits for use with a screwdriver style handle.

Actuallt - the security torx bits are quite handy if you have a Garmin GPS with their mount and you misplace your "key" that Garmin provides.. DAMHIK.

I have had several instances over the years where simple repairs to home appliances required security torx wrenches.
I got my Torx set at Sears. The craftsman Torx set had all of the sizes I needed, was well made and was inexpensive.

Mark - a FYI - the first set of security bits I purchased was from Sears. Cost was about $12 for the set. The same IDENTICAL IN EVERY WAY set is sold by Harbor Freight. On sale it's $2.99. You can be sure if it's Craftsman - but in this case - it ain't. It's made in the same Chinese factory. Sears or HF.. :)

Bet you can't find security bits in Sears any more made in the USA.. :) Can probably find standard torx drivers.

I use a lot of Torx.

Three sources come to mind:

1) Snap-on makes good stuff and since that's all I have, that's what I tend to go with.

2) Wiha make fantastic bits, probably the best quality anywhere.

3) You can order Torx bits on-line from McMaster-Carr. These are good quality.

Regular Torx, not Torx Plus.
