Intermitent power loss

Post by gibbo111 »

I've got a problem which is getting more frequent, I turn the key to start the bike and nothing at all . Turn it off/on a few times and away it goes, but today it wouldnt respond even after about 20 cycles of off/on. So I rang roadside assist and arrange to have it picked up tomorrow (its happened at home). I move it under the carport and turn it on and it starts easily. on/off a few times and its fine again. Its had the EWS recall done so any ideas? bike is 22 months old and battery seems ok

My understanding is when the EWS is bad, the gauges cycle normally, but when you hit the starter button, the display reads "EWS."

This sounds more like a bad key switch.

I had this exact problem.

Wait until you turn the key and not power, no nothing and you move you steering bars and the bike/ignition powers up :D btw....I was Never stranded

Search for my post titled "Replacement Antenna Key Ring...Failure??" to see my trials and tribulations, and the lenght of time i jerked along.

The solution was the repalcement of my ignition switch with no problems since. My dealer was Haps in Sarasota, and BMW was invloved.

The reason for the problem was never discovered; but bets were on the ignition switch was damaged, or an ignition wire loosened - during the EWS repalcement.

back at the dealer for the second time, been there for a week now and they say they dont know whats wrong . Iasked about a EWS failure and they assure me its ok!!. apparently they are going to start putting new parts into it to try to solve it. I want it back but now am wondering whether I can afford to keep this bike after the warranty runs out. I have a 650GS loan bike which is awful!

Bike is still in the shop , had a call today they think it may be one of the control units. They have been in touch with bmw in germany as they say this is a first. The mechanic said the 1200s have 5 control units whereas the 1100s had 1. might get it back next week
