Replacing Handlebar Grips

My heated grips need replacing after 60,000 miles. They are still producing heat...just that the rubber ribs have worn down and it looks like I may be getting close to the heating element.

Is it possible to just replace the rubber grips or do I need to replace the entire grip/heating element?

Take a hard look before you try the "solution" you found. I ruined the throttle side of my '04 by trying this. My grip had the wire moulded into the rubber of the grip with sort of a loop at the outside end. The electrical is a flat wire that I could not see a way to work past to install aftermarket grips over the heat element part.
AS Cycles has replacement grips for about $110.

Thanks for the info Jon. Since my grips need to be replaced, I have no choice but to at least try and replace them without damaging the heating element. Lot cheaper that way. Anyway, I also found the post below which will help. Let the surgery begin!

Removing grips

I removed the grips on my R without damaging them. I found that the rubber is glued to the heated grip sleaves only at the ends. I removed the bar-end weights and rolled the rubber of the grip back while carefully cutting the rubber where it was glued to the sleave with a #11 exacto knife. After both ends where cut free I stuck the nozzle from my air compress under the edge of the rubber. A blast of air from the compressor expands the grip and it slips right off. Compressed air also works well for installing the new grips.

The old grips where still completely intact. I gave them to a friend to reinstall on her 1150R.

+ 1, using this method will make this a very easy 5 minute job!
