Hall Sensor question

Post by Rockosmith »

A friend of mine who rides a '99 R1100R just lost the Hall Sensor this weekend. More accurately, it seems to be the wiring that has broken down and shorted out. His bike has 97000 miles on it now. Is this a common problem with the newer bikes?? MIne is a '04 R1150R dual spark with 78000 miles. I hate to spend almost $300.00 to replace a component that hasn't failed yet, but I would rather replace it in my garage than beside the road.

On my 2002 R1150 the Hall Sensor went bad at 20K.
Riding in the bad weather contributed to the problem.
I think that starting 2004 the Hall Sensor for our bikes was upgraded.
It would have been nice to have a spear one, while traveling.
My Hall Sensor failure cost me $1000.00 for the used one!!!

Will this one work on the 1150 ? Looks like there's a little labor involved in the conversion. Going at the way he did would not save you on a road trip.

I was on the road.
The BMW dealership did not have the Hall Sensor in stock and I did not have time to wait for it.

$300.00 the Hall Sensor.
$350.00 (3 hours) labor to take it off the used bike.
$350.00 (3 hours) labor to install it on my bike.

That was a big sacrifice on the part BMW dealer to take me without an appointment.

Not too big of a sacrifice. He had you over a barrel, so your choices were narrow, but it would probably be ok if you condemned his price gouging in public.
If you had had one of those Honeywell units in your pocket, a good technician could install it probably. I need to look in Clymers and see where this thing is. Does it really take 3 hours to get it out, or was that just fund raising ? Someone on the forum here had one fail on a trip with the east coast gang and his bike ended up on the trailer.

I was on my way from Miami to Vermont International Rally.
Crossing South Carolina, I was driving in the very heavy rain and got a flat tire.
While I was pumping the tire with the AirMan Compressor, I turned ON the ignition key.
Until today I am not sure what killed the Hall Sensor, rain or AirMan compressor :?: :?: :?:
But I was stuck for a weekend in South Carolina with the dead bike and plugged tire.
Since replacing the Hall Sensor requires removal of the gas tank, I was told that the labor would be 3 hours.
I also had to pay for the labor of the bike (2002 RT) that the Hall Sensor came from.
And immediately the hourly rate when up to $95.00 per hour. :^o :^o :^o
They sure did have me over the barrel since I told them that I need to be in Vermont the day after, to pick up my wife at the airport in Burlington.
I still have the bill from that dealership. $1000.00 for the Hall Sensor and $300.00 for the crappy tire. Cost me 13% of the price of my bike.
Probably at the end of the day they sure did have a good laugh at my expense.
Now days I always travel with the brand new Hall Sensor neatly stored under the gas tank. =D> =D> =D>
Since the guys in South Carolina do not support their local dealer, I had to do it my self all the way from Miami. ;) ;) ;)

Two mechanics 1 hour tops! The hard part is lifting off the gas tank.

I've been thinking of trying to locate a used Hall sensor (BeemerBoneYard?) and mounting new hardware per the linked instructions above. The cost should be minimal and it seems it like it would be worthwhile to have a spare on long trips (along with extra FD bearings, a new clutch hub and input shaft, replacement fuel injectors, etc . . . )

This might be a good time to mention that I just switched from AAA to Allstate RV service, which provides unlimited towing for all my vehicles, including my motorcycle. I also have roadside assistance with my Progressive motorcycle insurance.
