Mounting a GPS device like Garmin Zumo to a R1100R

Post by Sven71 »

Hi Guys,

Finally I want to mount my GPS device on my R1100R, but this is not as easy as I thought since there is no normal steering bar available. I was wondering if someone could share his experience and maybe post a picture as well!

Kind regards,

Sven

Hi Sven,

get yourself the pieces from ram mount (http://www.ram-mount.com/Products/Motor ... fault.aspx). I have the R1100R and had the same problem. We had a dealer here who sold me a longer screw (to replace one of the handlebar screws together with an aluminium bushing to fit in the hole. On top of the bushing came the ram mount and all was fixed with the screw.

And if you are based in Germany check out the website of Touratech or Wunderlich as they sell these gimmicks ready for mounting.

Kind regards

Hi sven,

I haven't solved this problem yet either - current have mine in my tank bag - which is not very good at all.

Ram-mount look like the best way forward from my research so far - I have seen an adapter that can be fitted under the mirror screw.

I would be very interest in what you find - please post and updates / finding you make.

thanks

As suggested above, there's a RAM adapter for R1100R handlebar mount bolt that provides ball mount for GPS etc. mounts and arms. Used one for Mrs. Sweatmark's first Roadster. Cycle Gadgets has them listed; will get the link when back home from vacation.

Here's info for RAM mount suitable for cast handlebar mount bolt on R1100R:
http://www.cyclegadgets.com/Products/pr ... tem=RAM-BA

Look for following in middle of web page:
R-A-M compatible* Hardware kit for mounting RAM-11M base to fork bridge area on BMWs with cast handlebars. Requires RAM-11M base. $10.00 Qty: # RCB-CHB-HDW
Add RAM-11M - 11mm Hole Base ($16.50)

So that's $26.50 for the special bolt & spacer, plus RAM ball on angled mount arm.

Here's what it looks like installed:

Hi guys,
Thank you all very much for your response!

As we have seen we have two types of R1100R's, the original one and the newer one with the redesigned dingle. For the original one the RAM mount seems to be a good option, but this option is not possible for my newer R1100R. The best "out of the box" option for the newer one should be the one from Gadgetguy:
http://1.1.1.2/bmi/us.st12.yimg.com/us. ... 041_849070

I don't like to have my heavy Zumo connected to the side mirror so I do not like the mirror-mount option. Also I can't believe it is possible to have a mount fitted on the mirror! I have thought about mounting the Zumo to my windscreen by creating a new bar between the two upper windscreen mounting bars. This has to be the best possible spot to have the Zumo. Or should there be an option to drill a hole in the screen for connecting a mount?

The last option I thought about is ordering a new steering bar from Wunderlich. This is a more regular steering bar model what makes it possible to mount all kinds of devices very easy.

Additional benefit will be that the position of the handles will be a little more backwards what, I hope, wil allow me to sit in a more comfortable upright position. Disadvantage will be that I will need to think of a new solution for mounting my windscreen. Why do I have a windscreen anyway?

Cheers

Sven,

the Ram-Mount thing also works on the newer R1100R (which I have by the way). I had my TomTom Rider mounted with exactly that little thing as shown. On top of that rubber-coated ball came a little arm which held another rubber ball and the mounting plate at the other end. This worked fine.

I have meanwhile changed the handlebar to exactly the shown Wunderlich one. But the position is NOT more backwards but the opposite. It puts you more forward in a more sportive position ... I wanted it that way but it may not be what you are looking for.

Hi Oliver and Sweatmark,

I have to admit you were right about the RAM mount. There is enough space beneath the button module to fit the RAM mount! For the time being I will order this mount and the extra bolt. The Zumo came with all the other parts I need to fit on the RAM ball.

Thank you guys!

Hello everyone.
I have done some lurking here and have just joined you officially.
I know I am late to this thread, but I too went with the RAM mount for my Garmin 2720. I used the one that clamps to the handlebars and attached an extension arm, the mounting plate, and the Garmin motorcycle mount to that. That was the only way I found that I could keep the unit from obstructing the speedo and tach and at the same time remain easy to view and operate.
Hope you found a good solution for your mount.

I just discovered this site today and am looking forward to exploring it more. I happened to come across this post and wanted to post what my father was able to find. I ride a '97 R1100R that was first owned by my dad for 10 + years. Anyway, he installed a device on the left handle bar that has the RAM ball mount but the ball mount is attached to a piece of thick rubber that he wrapped around the handle bar a few times. I've only recently started using it with my Garmin Nuvi (bought the RAM arm and mount) but it seems to do the job well. If anyone would like a picture of what I'm referring to I'll be happy to post (and I'll ask my dad where he bought it as I've never seen it online, etc.).
