I have a night black bike. I'm not very happy with the quality control of the BMW painting department. The paint is very soft and scratches easily. Also, I have noticed a few dimples in the paint and the "2" in the decal is on crooked. My R1150R had perfect paint. And as much as people bash Harleys, I think they have one of the best paint jobs of all.

I don't blame you for being pissed. I have wondered aloud if the new environmentally friendly water based paint could be the reason my Crystal Grey or whatever paint job never responds to a wax job the way my black 82 R100RS did. If and when I get it repainted it will be with old style paint if I can find it. I will ask that water based paint not be used. If the painters can't oblige then I will look else where.
On the other hand it might just be that black paint responds better to a good waxing than crystal grey.

I also thought the paint was soft. A week ago I rode to York, PA and took the Harley factory tour. (Retired guy with a lot of time on my hands). I was impressed with the robot lasers that cut the holes in the fenders and the fact that after the body work was painted and pinstriped they applied a coat of clear powdercoat over everything.
If little else you have to admit they all come out with great paint jobs.

I have the black with white pinstripes. However, I really wanted a more interesting color than what was offered. I previously had an R1100R Opal Blue. THAT was a BMW color.

After all, without looks (and noise) Harleys have little else to offer.

I am partial to the cristal grey. I've liked that color from the first time I laid eyes on this bike.

Crystal Grey ist the best and certainly the fastest colour.

No joke. Since this bike sadly is so far only available in greyscale tones and not in colour my choice was mainly influenced by thinking about the paints durability:
Black is classy. But the BMW standard paint is not known for outstanding quality.
Granite grey is interesting. But I had my doubts about the matte finish getting partly glossy with time and then looking unattractive.
Crystal grey looks good in changing light. And you get two coats of paint (Base and finish) for the price of one. So my choice was not difficult.

And (did I already mention it?) Crystal Grey of course makes the bike run faster than the other darker colours.

Cheers

I agree, but seeing they have used basicly the same engine, drive train and suspension for 50+ years they can put a lot of effort into fit and finish. They really excel in that area, and BMW could take a lesson from them. They (HD) always look great in the driveway or outside a bar (tavern, pub).

A black paint that wouldn't scuff when I use a tank bag would make me happy.

To take the thread off on a small tangent, I'd like to see it made in Granada Red:

Funny you say this. While the R1200R is my first BMW, the R75/5 is the bike that made me fall in love with BMWs. In the early '70s, you pretty much only saw black ones, but once in a great while you'd see a white one. I don't know if it was the rarity of them or what, but I always really liked the white ones. So, when I was finally able to get a BMW, even though I liked all the 2007 R1200R color options, for me it came down to a difficult choice between the beautiful black, and the Crystal Grey that, in the right light, reminds me of the pretty and unusual white R75s I used to see. I can't really say what made me make up my mind to get the Crystal Grey -- I know I'd have been happy either way -- but something made me go Crystal Grey and I'm very happy with it. (As it turns out, I may just get the best of both worlds since I have an opportunity to buy a really nice R75/6 in that pretty black!)

I got mine in chrystal grey because that was the color of the only R1200R on the floor, and I wanted a bike RIGHT NOW. I honestly would have preferred black with pin stripes because that, to me, typifies a BMW (even though my first BMW, an R50, was blue with pin stripes).

There, I said it--expressed disloyalty to my very own motorcycle, but it had to come out sometime. I actually like the grey, just would have preferred the black...
