Haven't done it - but have read of people simply rolling this one on (it's stretchy) while turning the engine over with the rear wheel - or using a piece of tin can cut to work like the BMW tool, goes over the alternator pully, you slide the belt on and pull the can off..
What is stressed is don't change the alternator position. It's fixed where it should be and shouldn't need changing.

2012 R1200R - I love this bike!
Stuid question! I just purchased a BMW R1200R in July. It is due for an oil change. But I cannot find the dang oil drain bolt. Any help? Im going to order the service DVD. Thanks for the help!

After reading Chitowns glowing review of his e-bay DVD I bought one and it took a dump on me-right in the middle of installing new shocks , no fault on Chi's part, obviously. I also believe the last time I read on the forum he had yet to have issues. I now have the "Official" DVD hopefully there should be no worries with it. One thing to note though is that the e-bay disk had the service checklists on it and I have yet to find them on the BMW one

i went the ebay route and the DVD works perfectly fine......

I'm sure BMW doesn't need me to defend their legal rights, and I do think that asking over $100 for the DVD is more than a bit excessive. But anyone buying the eBay DVD should realize that, in effect, they're receiving stolen property. Will you get caught? Probably not. Is it the right thing to do? You decide.
Bump for you guys thinking about doing it yourself... it's easy with the right tools and info!
I now have double the miles on my bike since this original post, doing all the maintenance myself.
I have saved a lot of money, and had the satisfaction of doing it myself. Oh yeah, my bike runs great and burns no oil.
Thats very cool that you do your own work Chi not many people dont have the balls to do so. I do all my stuff except what i cant do without the factory scan tool. the dealer wont tell me where i can buy one i dont mind spending the money I'm a mechanic for a living(ase certified). So i can make money on the side with it.

The factory scan tool is large $$$. Google "GS-911" - mucho less $$$ and lets you do lots of stuff with the modules on the bike. They have two versions - a limited enthusiast version with limited # of VINs it will connect to, and a pro version for guys who work on lots of bikes - unlimited VINs.

just did my 12K this weeked - did the exact same things (even though i am not sure xmission is due until 24K).
i used the same gear oil in the final drive as transmission, Liqui-Moly 75W90 Synthetic Racing gear oil (GL-5 rated). i purchased a full kit at beemerboneyard.
