New Calsci windshield for R1200R

Thanks Don. I appreciate your tolerance with my impatience. I really wanted to hear how it was going with that new shield.

Since Mark still keeps coming up with new things to try - I'm fairly certain we'll work it out.

It is strange but it almost seems like the shorter the w/s, the less my helmet gets knocked around. Of course, I'm only 5'5". Haven't tried the 20" Cee Bailey though. That may be the best way to elimate the knocking around but not sure I want to deal with the "sail" effect.

Inseam? And which seat? (Assuming low seat..) That determines where you head ends up. The sport shield that came on my bike showed me how amazingly quiet the Shuberth C2 was - and how nice it was to have no turbulence. Problem was - it was tiring hanging on at 70MPH from the wind blast on my torso.. so yes - shorter may well work better.

If you have a normal inseam (more than 25" and less than 30") - you might find the 20" too tall for you. You might end up looking through it rather than over it. I can't stand looking through a shield on a bike. (Can't understand how Goldwing riders do it..) Be worth making a cardboard template of it (20" from the top of the cutout for the headlight) before even considering it.

Didn't you also try the Z-technik? Am I opening a can of worms? Hope not, but I thought you were going to try one of those too. The mounting hardware was too daunting for me. I just sent it back.

I had it - but like you - the mounting hardware didn't appeal to me so I never mounted it. Sent it back. Reports on have been mixed - a few people like it - a lot of reports of buffeting. Another case of YMMV.

Helmets and turbulence. Have you tried Nolan, Arai, Shoei, etc? I've noticed a substantial difference in 'bobble head' by wearing different helmets. The Nolan N102 was, for me, the quietest and smoothest. The Arai seemed to be most affected by windshield turbulence and it is the loudest helmet.

Yup, you are right, my inseam is around 29" and I do have the low seat. I do have thick thighs which reduces my actual reach to the ground. Probably TMI but you have to take that into consideration, you know.

Funny you say that, I have an Arai Quantum 2. I have only ever worn the Arai. Maybe I will try another helmet. The bobble head thing is annoying and totally uncool looking. The noise in the helmet was insane with the Cee Bailey 18" and made it almost unbearable. Is the Nolan N102 a flip up? I would like to try the Shuberth but I didn't think they brought them into the US.

Oh, bugger. Let's see how mine goes - I've ordered a large and it should be here for next weekend, but won't get a long ride until early October. Will report. (At least I'll have a half-day to test it before commiting to my 4-day, 3,000 km trip.) I figure my head is about 2 to 4 cm higher than Don's, since I'm 5'8" with just slightly less of a case of duck's disease, and my bar-backs and lowered footpegs put me slightly more upright. My BMW Systems 5 helmet is like a C2, and it's noisier behind a screen than the previous System 4.

However, I'm really encouraged my Mark Lawrence's attitude - his emails to me also indicate a customer-first outlook. I hope CalSci will do a reduced price on a new-and-improved replacement (since returning across the Pacific is not feasible). On the plus side, my Parabellum 22" is not a bad screen, 'cept my minor mess-up from enlarging the indicator cut-outs to suit my non-US bike.

I went by Mark's shop and met him today. It is only maybe 15 miles from here.

He took my R1150GS windshield for a few days to see what he can do with it. I am not pleased with the one on it which came from National Cycle, and I do not want to get an AeroFlow as it works too well from all I hear.

I am looking forward to see what he comes up with.

I like the little postage stamp on my R, and I have to admit I enjoyed the GS minus the wind screen as well, but for long hauls, I need to have some more protection, though the helmet noise seems less with no windshield because there is no helmet buffeting in a clear stream of wind.

Hi All:

I received my 22" screen (Large) and did a run today with it installed. It is essentially the same effect as using the Cee Bailey 20" with turbulent air on the top inch or so of the helmet. The slots pass needed cooling air, as the width of the screen would make a miserable ride on days like today (98) without it. I am probably going to swap to the taller screen for use in cold weather and to stop the helmet rumble.

One thing that differs from the Cee Bailey is that the width keeps air off your shoulders, but kind of mandates hand protector installation for cold weather as the air is diverted into the grip area at highway cruise speeds.

The curve also does not quite match the BMW bracket stud angle which makes a tight fit on one side, and a gap on the other. The production radius may be slightly too long. I will post some photos when I get a chance. Nice product otherwise !

BTW" I am 5'11" and am using the standard seat for comparison accuracy.
