Re: loom failure

Post by Sunbeemer »

I've had the rubber looms disintegrating on my bike (a 2002) for years and don't know why, except that it's hot as here. But the bike is garaged at night and in shade during the day, and rarely ridden in the rain. Anyway, I found more of the outer loom cover for the right injector and the fuel pump wiring falling apart just where they exit the cable lay together on top of the right hand side of the engine. I wrapped them in silicone tape.

You might want to check this area too. You'll have to remove the small plastic cover under the right side of fuel tank to see these wires...they lead back over right hand paralever shaft bushing to the fuel pump plug and the right fuel injector.

Does anyone know if gasoline vapor would degrade this rubber?

I'll definately check the loom at those points while I'm sorting the horn connection. No idea on the gas vapour issue I'm afraid.

Sorry about the tread hijack...

CycleRob
Do you happen to have any pics of the wire harness as it routs its way from where this pic is all the way back to the fuse box?

Thanks

The factory made an error in judgment that must be corrected.

Very cool, thanks for the pic CycleRob

Here’s one for those in the know.... There's a gray/blue wire coming from the right handgrip controls to the connectors under the gas tank, that wire has shorted but I don’t know why for sure.

All I know for sure is that I rode in the rain, the next day 4.45a on my way to go teach an MSF class, I hit the starter button and I get a sizeable puff of smoke, forwards and under the tank. I shut the bike down and tried again and the thing started up and ran fine. Off to class I go… That evening the bike starts up fine, runs like it should. There’s one exception, I noticed that after a while of running the hwy. home, every time I clutched to shift gears I could here the starter engage (you know the grinding sound). Get home shut down to go open the garage, go to start the bike and nothing.

After some exploratory surgery the gray/blue is toasted beyond the connectors and all the waw to the factory splice. Soooo, anyone know what the heck the gray/blue operates? And what would cause this short????

BTW-got a replacement wire harness (beemer-bone-yard) installed today and I should finish-up tomorrow (I hope)

Let me know what yall think and if there’s an “r” rider near the Richmond, Texas. I might need a chase rider just in case my shake-down run goes south on me…..
