FixerUppper
Hi There
I have visited this website for at least a yr now.
Just dreaming of motoring around with nothing to do!
Heres an opportunity
http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/mcy/639040454.html
for 6K an r1200r fixer upper. I am not particularly good
as a mechanic. No tools etc.
Does anyone know what level of skill it would take to
fix it?
-Thx for your input

Since you mentioned you're not particularly good with tools.. probably more skill than you have. It's not that it's a difficult bike to work on, or that one is really trashed, but without a hands-on inspection (or seeing the writeup from SF BMW) - it's guesswork on our part.
It could be if you're happy with a cosmetically challenged bike - it might be a cheap fix.. but the fuel tank is over $1,000 all by it's lonesome, not counting the labor to swap all the internal parts over to the new one. And that's just one part. It isn't clear what's wrong with his front-end, but it sounds as if it needs some work, and that is the sort of damage that can result in surprises when you start disassembling things.
So - depends on your expectations and the actual condition of the bike. Ask him for a copy of the estimate from SF BMW and then we'd have something to go on..

Re: FixerUppper
Im working on one now with mostly front end damage, light rash on the right side and back. Working on it is easy but the parts are pricey. Example- forks are msrp $730 each, Chicago BMW price is $584 each. Beemerboneyard in NJ has an upper bridge listed in used parts. His price is high. I paid $2700 for an 07 with 1200 miles on it. There are almost no used parts out there.

Hi Again
Thx for the replies.
The owner is very forthcoming. To the question of the minimum needed to get it
usable he replies:
/*************************/
Ramon.
I've got the estimate from BMW which you could look at if you came to see the bike. It is located near Telegraph ave in Berkeley.
Here are the essentials as far as I can tell:
Damper: 290
Handlebars: 135
Fork bridge: 443
(I'd add another 500 for various gaskets, brackets and the like... all are all listed)
The tank doesn't need to be replaced.
Here are some things you'd probably also want to have for safe riding:
Rear light: 79
Instrument cluster: 915
Rear mirror: 161
Let me know if you'd like to look at it.
/*********************************/
Whats the difficulty in installing the above mentioned parts?
The instrument cluster doesn't need special tools to install?
thx again
Ramon

Re: FixerUppper
Depends on your level of mechanical skill. Some of the parts in the front end are rather criticial to safe operation of the bike, so the assembly has to be done right..rsilva wrote: Whats the difficulty in installing the above mentioned parts?
It likely has to be coded to the bike - which requires the dealer and their GT1 computer. Installation is simply screwing it in place - if the bracket for it is in place and not broken. The instrument cluster doesn't need special tools to install?

Re: FixerUppper
Look for the tone-ring on the front wheel and the ABS pickup that reads it. The tone ring is about 6" in diameter - a ring 3/8" wide with slots in it. It creates a square wave in the pickup when the wheel turns and that tells the ABS module if the wheel is turning.rsilva wrote:I went to see the bike. It doesnt look that damaged.

Oh well. I almost made the purchase. The owner changed his mind when I made the mistake
to ask him to turn it on! It started up without a problem and even the instrument cluster
that was loose turned on.
