what to do with the stale fuel?

Post by scottybooj »

So, I replaced the battery with the odyssey. oh yeah, loads of fun getting the tank back on by myself. actually, it wasn't that bad...but at 1am you sure get tired!

Started the bike up...first try. Now, since the fuel has been sitting since november, it's pro'lly bad...right? do i siphon it out or run it through? adding sta-bil won't do anything if it has already oxidized. has anybody used a reconditioning formula for fuel? I saw one online..PRI-d or something...but I know nothing about it.

i plum forgot to add the sta-bil....i usually ride all year but with the battery dead and a busy schedule, the bike was treated worse than a red-headed step child.

Hey! my kid's got red hair! :doubt:

alright...may the comments commence!

If it were me, I would drain as much out as possible and put it in my SUV which has ~31 gallon tank. Even putting it in a car should be OK.

Drain it out and add it to your car with over 3/4 a tank in it. You won't notice any diff or cause any harm. Fuel from Nov isn't all that bad, but it might not idle smooth or fast enough or run crisply if that's all there is in the bike's tank.
The car trick works. Have done it many times with fuel <1 yr old.

I agree with sticking it in the car, if it is really rotten. This is what I do with the gas in Amy's 250cc bike. It has no charcoal cannister, holds 1.5 gallons of gas, and has an easy-to-drain carb.

With the R?

If it runs acceptably, and you are going to have time to ride soon. I would just ride it nearly empty and then fill it up fresh. Emptying the R is more of a pain, and I don't like the flavor of gas. But then I am lazy and picky.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

Worrying about fuel from last November ???? not me...

Fill 'er up and forget about it...

Travelling through small country towns will reveal much worse fuel than that...

The Long Way Round dudes bought fuel from Kazakstan from a remote outpost.

Your fuel is probably OK. However, I would add a bit of fuel system conditioner such as Techron to your tank, fill with fresh fuel and ride out the old/new fuel mix.
Dennis....quit worrying about your oil..go ride

Just put in some Sea Foam start it up and go it will be fine, as soon as you have enough room in the tank put in some fresh fuel.

Run it. If it runs bad, then siphon it out and put it in your car. Chances are it'll run ok.

after reading the 'Still Snowing ' thread.. at the price you guys pay, you may as well just dump a full tank ( in an enviromentally friendly way of course), shrug you're shoulders and say 'Oh well'  ;)
