BMW tall windshield mount
Hello, Does anyone know the part number and/or the cheapest place to get this mount? After considering the Scout, etc it looks like I will be going with the Cee Bailey so I need the tall BMW mount. I am figuring the 18 inch should be fine (I'm 5'7"/167.5 cm, with a 28/29 inch inseam and low seat). Any opinions, help, etc would be appreciated. Thanks, Guy

The part number is available on line at Max BMW's on line fiche http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/fiche.asp As far as price goes Chicago BMW does 20% off. But maybe your local dealer will match it, can't hurt to ask.

Erik,
I am 5'-10 1/2" tall with a 30" inseam and I purchased to Cbailey 20" sereen which works well. The air starts encountering the helmit just above the faceshield with no buffeting. I can turn my head at speed (usually 75 MPH) with no adverse effect from the wind. The shield will come with grommets already fitted...just bolt it on. Make sure you get the bolting hardware to bolt the wind shield to the mount (4 bolts with rubber faced washers). enjoy!

Guy - we're about the same dimensions.. at least for height/inseam and I have the same low seat and all 3 height Cee-Bailey shields..stogiepuffer wrote:Hello, Does anyone know the part number and/or the cheapest place to get this mount? The 18" is a good compromise. The 16" is my heat of the summer one, the 18" is my spring and fall one, and the 20" is the winter shield. The 16" you feel air on the helmet about mid face-shield height. The 18" - some air on the helmet about at the top, the 20" air is just over the top of the helmet. In my experience - all of them cause some turbulence, the 16" probably the least. The 20" does make the bike a bit more sensitive to wind gusts and following trucks (the turbulence off them) - but not so bad as to make it awful.
I'm currently playing with an adjustable height MRA (AKA Wunderlich and Wudo) VarioShield on the BMW mount. The range of adjustment is good - close to the 3 heights of the Cee-Bailey shields, but there is some turbulence under certain conditions I find annoying, and I'm working on how to eliminate that. If I can - this will replace the three Cee-Bailey seasonal shields. The MRA shield was not designed for the BMW mount, but with some modifications to it - it mounts quite nicely.
FWIW - I also did have the factory "sport" shield.. which gave wonderfully clean air at helmet level, but required holding on too tightly at speed. I also had the factory "touring" (AKA Large) shield.. moved the air blast up to about chin level.. not bad, but still a bit tiring after a few hours at slab speed.

I'm sort of in the same boat. I have the sport shield which I really like for the clean air, but I'm trying to figure out what to do for longer rides this summer. I as do you Don, I also find that running on the slab at high speeds for long distances is a bit tough with the short screen. I want to get a taller touring screen but don't want to spend the trial and error $$$ to get it right. I'm about 5' 11" 32" inseam .. The one thing I want to avoid at all costs is buffeting which I find really tires me out on a long ride. Any thoughts or opinions appreciated.

If you buy the touring mount - you can always ride over to my house and go for a ride with each of the CeeBailey screens.. I have all 3 and it only takes 2 minutes to swap them.ErikM wrote:I'm sort of in the same boat. Thanks Don , that's very gracious of you. Once I recover from the Ohlins I just bought I'll take you up on the offer. I think that's really the only way to figure out which height will work without spending mutiple $$ to figure it out.

Re: BMW tall windshield mount
Went riding today.. was going to be a local ride - ended up about 170-180 miles or so (guess that's still local..) in quite windy weather. Found the MRA shield much more satisfactory - much less buffeting - with the slot between the two sections closed up with some foam rubber. Have to figure out how to do this neatly now (right now it's just a strip sorta stuffed in there.) Even directly into a 30MPH wind at around 70-80 MPH indicated - didn't have an annoying level of buffeting, which makes is much pleasanter. I do find having my head knocked around by buffeting really is tiring.
One big plus on the R1200R over every other BMW I've owned is how it remains stable and predictable even with large wind gusts from the side. I can feel the bottom (tire contact patch) move a bit off center - but the bike keeps running true down the road. Gives a nice feeling of confidence. Also the lack of push/pull when passing tractor-trailers makes it much nicer riding on the slab.
