San Diego info and recommendations

I'll be in San Diego for a few days in early March on business but am taking my wife as I will be staying over a weekend as well. Never been there before but hear it is beautiful. We are flying into Palm Springs and driving from there as we could get direct flights into and out of Palm Springs.

Looking for recommendations as to hotel accommodations, what to see (we'll have Fri night, Sat and Sun to explore) etc. Not imperative to stay in San Diego proper as my business a few miles north east of the city.
