"City Lids" - still available?

Post by mkatz »

Are city lids (used to make the bags less wide) available for the BMW hard bags that are used with the R1200R? I'm assembling a list of things to order when I order the bike. The fat look of the standard sized bags always bothered me when I had earlier 'R bikes.

Not that I'm aware of. But in the defense of the new cases, they look pretty decent, and certainly better than the previous version.

City Lids

Post by andyman99 »

I do a fair bit of commuting on my exceptional R12R, but would love to have a set of city lids, for those times when I'm "white lining" through slow or stopped traffic her in southern California.

Israel,
is your new R an 1150R or a 1200R (from your sig I'd guess the 1150..)

If the 1200 - please post the source..

At first City Lids looked like a good idea, since I do a lot of lane splitting. But my experience is that they may not be necessary.

The side cases stick out about 2" further than the mirrors. The mirrors are at a height where the part of the cars and trucks they would mostly likely impact are the mirrors on those vehicles.

Therefore, if I clear the cars' mirrors, most certainly the extra 2" on the side cases aren't going to hit the body of the cars, because car mirrors and especially truck mirrors stick out from the sides of their vehicle bodies way more than 2".

At least it's been working so far. However there ARE times when I see bikes without side cases thread through stalled traffic on city streets that I wouldn't attempt. But then that's because my mirrors stick out more than theirs.

Sure is interesting looking.

BUT -- Posted by Israel, who lives in Guatemala,he bought them from France, had them shipped to Ohio (USA?/Spain?), and the pictures have Japanese (?) writing on them.
Mr Klink (German  ) who lives in Sydney, Australia is asking the question and I'm in New Jersey (USA) waiting to see the answer.

Five years ago I would have said that this situation was impossible.
Wow --

I am in Guatemala, I did find them lids in Japan, VERY expensive and would not ship to the US, could not communicate with them...
A member of the BMWmotos fourum in Spain found them in France.
My sister, who lives in Mason Ohio Zip 45040 and speaks french ordered them for me.
Lid info: Designed by BCD part # 05/ 052255 Made in France. (from sticker on inside of lid)
The lids are not as sturdy as the originals, 2 locking grips to the lids not four. I have had them for almost a year and yes, I would purchase them again.
I am looking for the web page I ordered from, will post address when-if found.
