Is tank steel or alloy?

Post by 1150929 »

Maybe a moronic question, but I've been told that the R's tank is alloy so it doesn't need a full tank of gas for winter storage....any truth to this?

It is steel, and I usually fill it up, and add some Stabil if it is gonna be sitting for a while.

I thought 'alloy' was a term used to say it's metal, or a mixture of different metals. Now there are different types of metal as we all know. Our tank is steel.

Doesn't matter what it is. It will rust. That's all you need to know.

When you're checking the tank interior for rust, just be sure to take an extra moment or two to check the antifreeze level in your radiators.
It's wintertime now and cold.

Winter storage often necessitates that you repack your muffler bearings with a high quality grease.

It's always a good idea to check the spare tire and drain the carbs too.

Make sure you add anti freeze to your windshield washers and carry a shovel, warm clothing and a thermos in your top box

Just funnin' ya, because there's too much salt on the roads here to ride.

Seriously, a full tank also minimizes the amount of water that could condense in your tank, preventing rust and/or poor running.

By alloy I think he is referring to aluminum, which is usually galvanized as to not rust.

But yeah, ours is just steel, so fill it up and add some sta-bil if you aren't going to ride it much.

I always use a fresh lighter, turned up all the way to check for rust in my tank. Oh crap, I need a new tank and a face!

Rust ? Should I be concerned about rust in my tank ?
I'm basically a year round rider, only parking it for a month at most if the temp drops low enough to make ice.
I don't get caught in the rain, I ride in it on purpose.

Like as stated before, keep the tank full when parking for awhile.
