Quicklock Tank Bag fitted

Post by Caroanbill »

(Can't find the previous discussion on this item, despite a search.)

My SW Motech quicklock fuelcap ring arrived last week, and I fitted it on Saturday. Very easy.

The ring does look a bit out of place on its own, but I doubt I'll use the bike much without it - too handy to have the few immediate things just in front of me: water, spare gloves, sunglasses, wallet, phone and camera. I've always missed the fairing pockets of RT/LTs and I've gotten very used to the 'pod' of the F650CS.

I'm using the smallest bag (Daypack II, 3.5litres), since I no longer like having a large tankbag. It is small (I'll have to find a smaller water bottle) but that's the point: I doubt I'll even use its small expansion (8 litres). It is so small it doesn't hit the paint! (I think the larger ones do.) It also takes a good-sized map pocket - haven't used that yet. The exterbnal pocket holds my toll pass where the toll points can read it. I've added a light shoulder strap, and that's about all I need. Poifick.

I've had to learn one new habit. To fuel up, first put the bike on the centrestand, then put the tank bag on the seat (it slips off the seat if the bike is on the sidestand).

.. yes, pics will follow (my bike lives elsewhere for insurance reasons, so it'll be a few days).

If you are able, please post some pictures of the mount and tank bag. I don't think anyone has the mounts in the US yet, but I will put one on my bike when they are available.

Will be visiting Syndey, Melbourne, etc. next month. Spending a week with some friends in Sydney and then doing a bunch of the tourist things I never got to do in the many times I've been there on business.

Looking forward to the visit....not the going to and coming back though.

Incorrect for the R12R, I'm afraid. Different fuel cap setup to the R1150R, F series etc.

In fact, the mounts have only just become available (or available again) to fit the R1200R and other BMWs that do not have external retaining bolts in the fuel cap ring. My supplier (http://www.motorradgarage.com.au) managed to get one of the first - they were originally scheduled for August delivery, but ...

This quicklock mount includes a REPLACEMENT fuel cap ring with holes (and captive nuts) to take the quicklock mount.

One R12R owner has pics (the ones I couldn't find) of how he drilled the original fuel cap ring, and cut back the red plastic filler surround, to bolt on the old quicklock mount.

The new arrangement is much easier - it had to be, coz I'm mechanically inept!

Some tips ...

Try the new-ish walk around Georges Heights (Balmoral to Chowder Bay) for the most spectacular harbour views in Sydney. It's on land recently handed back from military use and not yet on the big-bus tourist intineraries. Some nice restaurants around there - Ripples at Chowder Bay is making a splash, and the Boatshed at Balmoral has the Sydney water cafe ambience without the price or attitude.

If you like landscape, stroll around Bradleys Head - the angophora trees will be glorious (red, barkless trunks) ad the flannel flowers should still be out. Other oft-missed spots are West Head (Kuringai National Park) - drive around viw Akuna Bay to see what the Sydney saltwater creeks look like without development; North Head (Manly); and some quiet harbourside strolls along Middle Harbour Creek. The cliff walk from Bondi to Bronte beach is worth the crowds .. and great coffee at both ends!

It you want to see why Sydneysiders are so spoilt for wow-factor food, try Billy Kwong in Crown St Surry Hills - easily the most exciting asian food in Sydney (and maybe anywhere). Or Sean's Panaroma at Bondi. Or Buon Ricordo (where Armando Percuoco refused Tom Cruise a takeaway meal).

You won't need my help finding the usual spots ...

Enjoy!

Tips

Caronbill...

Thanks for the tips. Have been there a couple dozen times, but mainly for buisness. Now that I'm a retired old fart, I get to do a lot of the things I spent minimal time on before.

Will be spending a week with an old friend who lives in Sydney on the harbor. He has our week already planned, and since he likes his fine wine and food, I suspect those plans are already taken care of as well.

I used to jog all around the harbor area when I visited there. Don't jog as much any longer. The will is still there, but the body doesn't want to cooperative any longer.

Thanks again.

Finally came around to mounting one myself. I opted for the Trail QL model witch is nice and large. It looks very well made and holds quite a lot of stuff( keep the weight down though as the manufacturer advises to keep it around 3kg). I could fit enough clothes in there for a weekend riding and some shoes. Side pockets are handy to for cell phones, sunglasses whatever. Also very handy is a point where you can mount a navigation system or pda/iPod in a seperatly sold holder, something I will be thinking of in the future for fitting a car oriantated gps system like a Garmin Nuvi. On the twistedthrottle site the trail bag isn't mentioned if you look at R1200R specific bags but it fits great. Only thing that was a bit of a pain was fitting the very short bolts threw the base of the tankbag and the quicklock plate, one just wouldnt come thrue enough and I would say it is a very very tight fit, now it's done though the fitment is very need and the quicklock system is an absolute joy to use. Will take some pictures and post them asap.
