Louder Horns

Hello all,

I just received a Stebel Magnum horn from Nippy Normans in the UK. Apparently you can transfer the OE connecter over from the OE horn to the Magnum to avoid cutting the wiring harness.

"Keep the horn connector on the harnesss, remove the corresponding connector on the OE horn and attach this connector to the new Magnum horn for a really neat connection."

Has anyone tried this? The OE connector on the OE horn is a plastic block that looks like it is rivetted on. I'm wondering whether you can drill the rivets out and clip it onto the Stebel somehow.

I thought that there was a conector further down the line but can't tell for myself(so two wires coming from the original horn ending up in a connector that connects to the wiring harness of the bike).

I plan on getting a louder horn and have no problem nipping off that connector. But that's because there is no danger of me putting that wimpy piece of crap OEM horn back on!

It's exactly the same connector - I'm using an R1150RT snail-horn in place of the stock beeper. I also picked up a junk one off a wreck in the hopes of salvaging the horn side of the connector - but it looks difficult to impossible to remove without destroying it in the process.

Thanks for the replies. Don, I was also planning to use the connector from a junk horn. Your experience suggests that it wouldn't be worth the trouble. Which of the RT snail horns are you using, the low or high tone? and is it better than the standard R12 horn. I know they are not too expensive, so even if it is marginally better I guess its worth a try. The other day I had an incident on the highway, blew the horn and the noise was so insipid that even I could only just hear it.

The high tone - it seems to be more penetrating. I am going to persue adding a Strebel horn to the bike (I have one laying around waiting to go on..) once I think of a bracket for it.

Funny thing - there is a LOT of room available if you have the carbon-canister removed to access a front shock to set preload. Since I'm still tuning my shock, I setup the hoses so the tank vent goes to the canister vent and the vacuum line is closed off.. just for test purposes of course (closed course, professional driver..)

I fitted the Stebel Nautilus horn to my R1150R. I can thoroughly recommend it as it has saved my bacon a few times by waking up half-asleep, lane-drifting, car drivers.
