Clutch noise

When driving around town I get a "clack" noise every time I let the clutch out. This used to happen with my old 1150 and my dealer reckons this is normal even for the 1200 bikes - but I'm sure the R1200R test bike didn't do this when I tried it. Does anyone else get this noise or am I just paranoid about it? Recently, while driving around the centre of Geneva the people with me were commenting on the "funny" noise my bike was making while on and off the clutch through the traffic.

If you pull the clutch in and coast (without changing gear) and then let it out do you still get the sound?

My clutch is very light and silent. I rarely hear anything other than a snick even when changing gear (a nice change on a BMW). Doesn't sound normal to me.

I would ask your dealer to check it out and if they refuse write to the BMW head office in your country.

Thanks for the reply Hass. No, there is no noise when the clutch is operated while coasting. It only does it when operating it in slow moving traffic. Even while stationary, if you pull it in and out you can here the noise. I asked my dealer to check it out last week at the 6000 mile service and they said it was ok. Think I will need to pay them another visit. They are generally very good but I am sure it is not my imagination. The bike is 7 months old so still under warranty.

I also get get the clacking noise from time to time but also only when moving slowly. Its not the clutch - its the backlash in the final drive being taken up as you release the clutch. Some bikes have more backlash than others but your dealer workshop will be able to take up some of the backlash if they deem it neccesary and are prepared to accomodate you.

I think you have described my noise well Phillo. I agree that some bikes are worse than others. The test bike I rode had virtually no noise whereas mine is quite loud. On the old 1100/1150 engines the final drive backlash was adjusted via a screw and large nut on the final drive housing but I can't see any such adjustment on the 1200's. Have you had this operation done and does it make a difference?

Hi Rich - No I have not had anything done to mine as I do not really have a problem with occasional clack - I may ask the dealer to have a look at it at the 10000 km service if I fell it needs attention.
