instrument cluster speed rating?

Trying to find a useful screen for my R12R is getting under my skin. The little sport screen doesn't do much other than put some turbulence around my neck. It is quieter rising up about six inches in the saddle; this is weird since I am a bit over 6', though my inseam is 34".

When I ride I nearly always have the tankbag on, the BMW one. So, is the disturbed air from the screen, or from the tankbag? To test I removed the screen tonight. Tomorrow I will go for a ride. This, however, raised another question.

What is the speed rating of the instrument cluster? At some point will it lift off? BMW sells the bike with no screen, so it should be OK. I guess I just need to avoid any large beetles or whatnot. I don't want to test its shock rating.

I am 5'8" and a mighty handsome 5'8" at that. Anyway I thought the sport screen and BMW tank bag did a pretty good job of keeping the wind off of my chest. I thought my head was in pretty clean air.

5ft 9ins and find the wind hits me square in the chest - sport screen and no tankbag. No turbulance round the head - but then again I am not sure I would notice as my helmet is so stable.

I didn't notice it until I rode without my earplugs. The difference between seated and raised a few inches is noticeable. Using a hand, if I block the space between the bottom of the helmet and the shoulder it goes away.

No testing today: Heat advisory and I know I would be in sections of stalled traffic.

I rather suspect it's the tank bag that is doing the blocking of the wind. I found with the sport screen and no tank bag, I got wind on me from lower chest (upper belly) up. It was very quiet in my helmet since there was no real turbulence.. but the wind pressure was enough to try to push me off the bike. So - I've been trying different windscreens since then (on my 4th now..)

BTW - I'm 5'7" on a tall day, but short inseam so upper body is fairly long.

The noise issue was with the sport shield. I rode today with no sport shield, but with the tankbag.

The first run was with no earplugs: There was a whistling from the helmet which was the same sitting, standing on the pegs, or crouched pretty far down.

Then I put in the earplugs gently (more later). Wonderful. OTOH, the wind pressure gets noticeable over 50 mph or so; this would be tiring on a long ride.

I have the Super Hearos earplugs. Normally I squeeze them to thin tubes and stick them way the heck in the ear; so far in there that to get them out I need to use a key to catch the edge inside my ear canal. Sooner or later I am going to scrape the canal wall and get an infection. Also, my ears ache after a couple of hours. With the reduced sound from removing the sport shield I can put them in normally with some of the flange sticking out for easy removal with fingertips.

It looks, for me, it is either no wind screen or a tall one. No screen is good in the summer for around town. Long rides and cold weather will require a tall screen.
