Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

I'm having an odd instrument malfunction on the 2012.. when I shut off the bike - the remaining mileage display goes to "----" - after starting the bike and riding it a bit - it comes back with a number. I somehow suspect this is related to fuel-strip #2 - which showed EMPTY once a week or...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Below is a link to a instrument cluster taken off a 2008 BMW R1200R. Might be an option. http://www.ebay.com/itm/08-BMW-R1200R-Gauge-Speedometer-Speedo-62117713642-/231821934793?hash=item35f9aa00c9:g:6vUAAOSwqrtWoZ~8&vxp=mtr Roger L Hi Roger, Just a heads up - I believe the cluster is tied to t...

Re: Tankbags?

Hey Bill, I'm still adjusting to the difference in size - I had all sorts of never-used crappola in the old one. This one carries the necessities nicely. One modification I'll do to it (and apparently everyone else who bought one does) is snip off the front strap, meant to go around a steering-head ...

Re: Tankbags?

N8 - I'll have to take a few pics. It does stick above the tank a bit, but not enough to bother me, and the added stability over a strap mounted tank makes it worthwhile. I would have liked the BagsConnection one if the tank mount was priced so silly. The way Givi did it is really quite clever, and ...

Re: Tankbags?

Adam, Should be the same flange for both. There is no discernable difference in the cap/mounting that I can see (and I owned an '07..) The one I ordered (and fitted) was a BF06. Be worth calling/emailing them to see if it's in stock or obtainable. Here is a euro ebay listing: http://www.ebay.co.uk/i...

Re: Removing ABS module

As long as you can seal off the lines so there is no leakage - I don't see a problem. Brake fluid is one of the worlds most effective paint removers. One trick someone mentioned on another forum - slightly depress the brake lever before disconnecting the modulator. You probably want to relieve press...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Interesting. There seems to be a tie-wrap on the right side of the cluster (left side in photo..) If it's holding any wires associated with the cluster that's the first place I'd look. BMW if infamous for over-tightening tie-wraps, eventually damaging the wire it's holding in place. If it isn't hold...

Re: Tankbags?

Ended up ordering the Givi 15 Liter Tanklock Tankbag - XS307, and the mounting ring for the R1200R ($15.30).. Has sidepockets so some organization is possible. http://www.twistedthrottle.com/givi-15-liter-tanklock-tankbag http://static.twisted-throttle.net/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/28496d0...

Re: New PIAA LED lights - and mounting

Happy New Year, Don! Thanks! I think you did a great write up of your led light adventure. I have a new to me low mile R1150R that also needs some lighting adjustment. I was thinking of mounting the piaa lp-270 fog lights on a pair of Hawk Talon combo mounts. These are the type of mount that attach...

Re: Tankbags?

I've been looking at Givi bags a bit - they have a similar tank mounting to the gas filler - which costs about 1/5th the cost of the SW-Motech. Problem has been seeing one in person, there apparently is only one dealer in NJ who may carry them in stock, and it's a longish ride for mid-winter (especi...

Re: Do I need these at 12K Service?

Leonardo, The fluids are due - especially the brake fluid if it's never been flushed is way overdue. The prices aren't out of line - the dealer isn't a charity - it takes money to keep the shop open, pay the taxes, pay the techs. The labor rate is likely around $100/hour - which seems high until you...

Re: Tankbags?

One other thing that didn't thrill me with the BMW factory bag.. if you look at the pics of it on Alex's biek, it's really rather tall. Not a problem for you abnormally sized riders (over 5'8" - and I'm under that..) but for those of us who are more vertically compact actually trying to a map i...

Re: Tankbags?

Thanks for all the input.. seems some smart company would make the perfect bag for us.. I had the OEM tankbag shortly after I got the bike. I didn't keep it for several reasons: that was before they had the divider for it available, so the inside ended up just being a big pile of stuff I had to paw ...

Tankbags?

My 20 Liter RKA bag is starting to show it's age (has about 40,000 miles on it..) so I'm considering a new one. I like the RKA for a lot of reasons and dislike it for a few reasons. LIKES: - Big. Holds a lot of stuff. - Compartments - helps organize the stuff somewhat - Useful map pocket - big enoug...

Re: "MV lifting handle"??

Mustang Man - got the MV one for Christmas, installed it, then removed it. IMHO - bad design for the R1200R. The only mounting place is next to the screw at the bottom of the side panel, which is considerably forward of the frame member I normally use for lifting. This means I'm lifting more dead we...

Re: The R1200R Photo Discussion Thread!

I've been away from this board for a few years but on just buying a 2012 R1200R I've returned and will post a few things to contribute. First one is of last years trip to China, this is the bike they lent me for the week, I'd had it the previous year and has prompted me to get the one I have just b...

Re: New PIAA LED lights - and mounting

Don - I have an 07 12R and have been very unhappy with the Denali D2 lights I have been running. They don't do much for my illumination although I am probably more visible to oncoming traffic. I assume you would recommend the Hella FF50's again and if yes, do you know if they draw more power than t...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Given your symptoms - if it was me (and I am somewhat experienced in electronic tech stuff) - I'd be pulling the instrument cluster, disassembling it and looking for anything odd - like corroded or loose connectors between components, or burned components, or bulging capacitors. It might be just the...

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Both of mine always defaulted to whatever was displayed at shutoff. The only thing that self-toggles is the temperature display shows up if the temperature is below about 40F.. I guess to tell you it's below 40F (like I wouldn't realize that before my heated gear kicks in.)

Re: My clock stops when the ignition is off. Anyone else?

Next thing to try is R&R every connector - in the hopes that one is loose or making poor contact. The one in particular I'd look at are the ones going to the ZFE module - which is located under the tank. Think of the ZFE as the switching-center of the bike. It turns things on/off in response to ...
