Re: Time for a change

Well guys, haven't been around for a while but thought I'd drop by to say I'm swapping bkes after just over 5 years of ownwership. The 1150 has been a great bike to run but it's time for a change. Saw the new G650GS this week and thought I'd go for it, so am staying within the Beemer family but los...

Re: Blue Ridge Parkway

Thanks for the tips guys. Now 1 more question. I heard it is better to ride from South to North as I will be on the outside lane, and the mountains are easier too see from the sadel From my experience in N.C. I would agree. +1 on this for the most part, although I really don't think it matters too ...

Need someone to check out a bike: Arkansas

Fellow BMW riders, I'm looking at buying a bike a long way from me and would love to have someone be able to check it out for me. The bike in question is a 2007 G650 XChallenge and it is in Atkins, Arkansas, west of Little Rock off of I40. I'm in Virginia! Please let me know if you can help!...

Re: Rear Wheel Play Question

Good to hear that it seems to be the paralever bearings.

Now here's the stupid question:

Is there a write-up about how to do this online?

I found some info but I don't have a service manual (this forum is awesome and has covered me so far)!

Thanks for your help!

Re: Rear Wheel Play Question

MIXR, Thanks for your input. I just checked my bike again. No play from the 9 & 3 positions. Just for kicks I checked the torque of the rear wheel lugs and all was good. Then, from the right side of the bike (the gear housing side) I grabbed the gear housing at 12 and 6 and the noise is still th...

Re: Rear Wheel Play Question

Hank, Thanks for the reply. I will try 9 and 3 with the brake on when I get home tonight. I have never heard any creaking. The play is slight (I can't see it) but can easily be felt. I hadn't noticed wandering while riding either, so the play is obviously not too bad. Famous last words. I ne...

Rear Wheel Play Question

OK, I checked my rear wheel play yesterday (which I do every so often) and unfortunately found that I had some. I have play with my hands in the 12 and 6 positions with and without the rear brake applied. No discernible play in the 9 and 3 positions. From what I have read: -if you get play in 12 and...

A good reason to buy another set of tools

All, Because of an upcoming trip I've planned on my '02, (that AND I was tired of listening to the sewing-machine type clicking while at high-idle), I decided to upgrade the cam tensioner with the one from rubber chicken racing. The job was very straight forward but was even easier because of a new ...

Re: Gas Leak adventure!

After owning my 2002 R for almost a year now, I finally broke down and replaced the quick disconnects about a month ago. Interestingly, the hose on my bike was actually the cause of the original leak. I bought new QDs but only replaced the cracked hose at first. Rode about ~50miles more (although ma...

Flyscreen Removal: wind buffeting gone

After getting a new helmet recently and still suffering from lots of wind buffering & noise, I decided to remove my bike's flyscreen. What a difference! It is MUCH quieter now, although I have to deal with the pressure on my chest when riding...but overall it was definitely worth it for me. I st...

Re: Total Control Riding Clinic

All, I attended the Total Control Riding Clinic this past Saturday in Maryville, TN. First off, it was a lot of fun! We had a small class (7 people) with two instructors, so there was plenty of one-on-one time. Wayne and Dave were the instructors and they where both very knowledgeable and great to w...

Total Control Riding Clinic

All, Just to let everyone know, the Total Control Advanced Riding Clinic has some slots open for an upcoming class in Maryville, TN that I recently signed up for (March 21). It's pretty far for one day (~4hrs from here), but it's supposed to be good (I hope). If any one of you happen to be there, I ...

Re: Tire Pressure System

The reason nitrogen is used for inflating tires is that N2 expands less than compressed air (w/ humidity) with increasing temperatures For all gases! : PV=nRT P=pressure V=volume n=# moles of gas R=Universal gas constant (you can pick your favorite units!) T=temperature Any gas will expand or contr...

Re: Tire Pressure System

Actually a little know fact is that since N2 makes 78% of the atmosphere and the force of gravity is 14.7 pounds that means if a tire is filled with N2 and it develops a leak it will never get below 14.7 pounds as the pressure inside the tire and outside will be balanced. Some owners have used a bl...
