Re: Recommended BMW dealer in Chicago? Chances for a discount?
BMW Motorcycles of Milwaukee is just 90 miles north. I have been a customer there for the last 10 years and have been very satisfied. I met a group of guys there that rode up from Chicago to buy some clothing. They said they have made the trip several times because they did not like the dealer in Ch...

Re: Preparing the R1200r for winter
If you use the center stand, you can put wood blocks under the front of the engine so that both tires are off the ground.
BTW, the Battery Tender I use is also a smart type charger.

Re: Preparing the R1200r for winter
I always remove the battery and have been using a Battery Tender brand charger. It remains connected continuously for 4-5 months up in the attic (40-45F temps). Been doing this for the last 12 years with great success. The bike starts right up in the spring. No battery failures so far.

Re: Seeing in the rain ???
Shoei also offers Pinlock versions of their faceshields. They work great. Riding at night in the city there is a little bit of halo effect around lights but I don't consider it a problem. On cold nights it is less annoying than the cold air (if cracked open for venting) or fogging up when closed. Ho...

It is a T55. My local Sears store did not have it, but the local auto parts store did.

Does the power cone interfere with the BMW saddlebags?
It looks very nice. I heard one on a 1200GS yesterday and it sounds great.

Re: R1200R vs R1200GS
I owned a R1200GS before I bought my R1200R. On rough pavement, the stock suspension of the GS was better than the stock suspension of the R. Now that my R1200R has Ohlins suspension, it is much better than the 1200GS stock suspension. Keep in mind I am talking about rough pavement, not off-road. Th...

Re: Newbie says hello and question about crash bars
The SW-Motech instructions I got listed the following torque values:
M6 screws 9.6 Nm
M10 screws 46 Nm
M12 screws 79 Nm
They also said to use a medium strength locktite.
I just installed them last week. Very easy to install. They look good in the photos and even better in person, IMHO.

Re: Purchased a Hugger. Now what?
To remove the rear wheel completely you also have to pivot the exhaust out of the way. I had some difficulty moving the exhaust on mine so I would suggest doing it the way that ScottSuff mentioned. The hugger fit well and looks good.

Re: license.plate
Daniel,
I used an open end wrench held at an angle such that only the tips made contact with the flats on the nut. I used self locking nuts so I did not need to apply much torque, just get them snug.
Tak

Re: license.plate
I cut an aluminum sheet (1/16" thick) slightly larger than the license plate and drilled 4 holes in it to match the mounting holes on the bike. Then I drilled another 4 holes to match the license plate. Painted it black. Mounted aluminum plate to bike then mounted license plate to the aluminum ...

Re: OHLINS SPRING RATES
1. Ohlins does provide customized spring rates if the distributor you buy them from specifies them for your weight and riding style. I recently purchased a set from Kyle Racing and they were set up perfectly for my 130 lb weight. Much improved ride compared to the BMW shocks. Mine have linear spring...

Re: ABS is good for you!
The behavior of the ABS on my 800ST was the main reason I traded it for a R1200R. The 800ST ABS would release (even when using only the front brake) when braking even moderately over rough pavement. Over the same pavement, braking harder, the R1200R ABS does not activate. The R1200R brakes are aweso...

Clarification to my previous post --- By 120V I was referring to regular AC house current here in the US.

Re: Tire Inflators?
You can buy 120V air compressors for under $50. Mine has lasted for many years. Don't rely on the built-in gage though. Buy a good tire gage, preferably one with a bleed off valve. I use an Accugage mechanical dial type gage with a short hose (about $22). Just use the compressor to fill a couple psi...

I also use the location Tom mentioned. I am only 130 lbs and have no trouble getting it up on the centerstand, even with the saddlebags installed. Get your weight on the stand and just a gentle tug brings it up.

Re: too tall... for mini me
Correction to my last post.
I should have said the oil cooler on the 1200R is located down low compared to the radiator on the 800ST being mounted higher. They are roughly the same size - for some reason I was thinking of the 1200GS.
