Re: Clutch & brake lever replacement

lewellen - Just a quick thought. I don't know of any place that BMW used hex keys on this bike (I could be wrong) most of the fasteners are torx (star) type. Surprised you don't have a set yet. Check to make sure your using the right kind. I think websterize just changed his levers but he's most li...

Clutch & brake lever replacement

Hi, folks, What might be a dumb question here... When I went to try to replace my '08 R1200R's brake and clutch levers, I found I couldn't remove the pivot-and-plunger assembly from the old lever. The pivot and plunger need to be reused on the new lever, but the piece they ride in, does not. It look...

lewellen - thanks for your plain language thoughts on carbon fiber. Thats the answer I was looking for, not a bunch of solemn high tech talk. BTW: Human Nature if you just spent a kilobuck to reduce the weight of your motorcycle by 0.25%, you want people to know! I think I may be guilty, just went ...

Re: West Coast tour: to ship or rent?

I am taking all the advice. I have adjusted to ride through mt hood and down through mckenzie pass. I have to find a way to get some additional time for crater lake, but am sure I can do it. Since 36 is so endorsed, that will likely be my way across the state. I can't thank you all enough for the r...

Re: Soft Luggage For R1200R

I'm wondering what "soft" luggage looks/works good/well with the R? I have a medium motofitz (sp?) seat bag. I'm thinking about a pair of Wolfman saddle bags. No reason they work really well with the R. Thoughts? Lyle I'm not familiar with Wolfman bags, but I've heard good things about th...

Re: Carbon fibre A Arm

From my bicycle experience the biggest problem with carbon fiber components is that one scratch creates a stress point, and potential failure. I've got one recumbent bike with carbon fiber forks and I inspect them quite often. Well, you could take the approach early motorcyclists did with their tor...

Re: Carbon fiber A Arm

Maybe someone can answer this on carbon fiber. I have three bikes in the garage that are 30+ years old they are in good shape and just as serviceable as when they were new. What is the service life of carbon fiber when exposed to sunlight for years? I've seen carbon fiber body parts a few years old...

Another thing in Oregon - Crater Lake.

Beautiful, and quite unique in all of my travels to date. It might be out of your way, but it's worth a couple hours' detour to see.

Winkeldc, here is a great resources for West Coast riding info, Get yourself a West Coast map so you can match geography with Highway names, and then scroll down to the trip planning section. Pashnit members are always happy to share advice, too. They will even plan your entire route, if you let th...

Re: Less expensive alternative to a hugger

I could have used that last weekend. Some of the back roads up in the Santa Cruz mountains ... it hadn't rained in a little while, but it's so humid and shadowy, the roads were still wet and muddy. There were times when I was going around 15 mph (and passed a guy on an 800 GS). I had mud flecks on t...

Re: leather vs textile jacket

With all that's been said, I can't really add too much, except perhaps this: Whatever you wind up going for, buy quality. That means good material (no top-grain leather, no windbreaker-thickness nylon), well-stitched seams, heavy-duty zippers, well-placed fasteners, sufficient adjustments so as to l...

Re: Mirror distortion

Weird. I think the left mirror is supposed to be flat, or perhaps slightly convex. Definitely not worthy of a funhouse, however. I'd head to the dealer, take a look at other left-side mirrors to make sure it isn't your perception, and then ask for a warranty replacement - it's a defect that was ther...

Re: Service Lift for R12R

Hi, Jed, The main things a lift will do for you are: Provide a means of raising the bike up to a more convenient work height; and Provide convenient tie-down points to secure the front or rear of the bike so you can work on the other end (e.g. tie down the back with the centerstand down, so the fron...
