Thanks to all for the invaluable info. I now have a new plate and currently working on a suitable stand and getting the spacer made, before pulling it down. Still loving the bike, if not the savage brakes!

it's been perfect ever since that fix, so I would keep that loose cover plate in mind if you experience an intermittent 'dead' starter. There are at least 4 of my spacers that are spinning in various bikes (including mine). All of my parts are 6mm, there is no interference issue.
