Wow, that's awesome....that was a radio-controlled re-enactment of the launch of the X-1, "Glamorous Glennis", flown by Chuck Yeager to break the speed of sound in level flight for the first time.

The rocket glider is cool. Can the pilot eject in the stratosphere?

A friend who is into RC sent me this link. Very cool.

That was cool! The guy flying the B-29 was good! Chuck would have made a smoother landing with the X1 though!

I posted that earlier to some friends and mentioned I *thought* the Bell rocket plane, piloted by Chuck Yeager was the "X-1". One of them said he thought it was really the X-15??
Yeah, the B-29 driver was good...too bad the real ones weren't that good, they were lucky to make it into the air much of the time.
My dad was a B-29 radio operator in the 444th Bomb Group (Very Heavy), both in CBI and of Tinian.
LOTS of round trips to Japan.

If anyone is interested in B-29's, the Pacific air war and meeting many of the old B-29er's that are still with us, my son has a very good website devoted to that:

X-1. It's in the Smithsonian, at the Air & Space Museum, hanging over the lobby. The X-15 might be hanging up there next to it, but I'm not sure.

Yeh, the X-15 was the last (so far) of the X-Planes. The X-1 was the first, and the first airplane to go supersonic.

Weren't some of the NASA "Lifting Body" experimental aircraft X-planes, like the X-24-A and X-24-B?

http://www.nasa.gov/centers/dryden/news ... -DFRC.html

Then there were ones like the X-21-A, X-26-A/B, X-27, X-29-A, X-31, X-32-A & B, X-33, X-34, X-35 and so on...

GREAT video on the R/C planes, though!

One question... Wasn't the real Bell X-1 slung underneath the B-29 from the bomb bay, and not under the wing like they had the R/C rig?

Other aircraft had broken Mach 1 in a dive, by accident; the X1 did it first in level flight (actually in a shallow climb), on purpose.

Yes, I noticed that too, and I think the scales of the models were not the same. The X-1 looked a little big to me.

Dallara --

Whoops, yes, quite right. There were higher-numbered X-Planes than the X-15.

MidlifeMark - I bet you have read The Right Stuff haven't you? I loved the Yeager stuff in that including carrying the broomhandle to close the hatch because of the horseriding accident the night before the historic flight.

Mac is great RC pilot and also a good normal pilot. I got a chance to fly with him in his Cub a couple of years ago.

Yeah, all the ones I know are neat guys too...just not "normal"!
One of my favorite buds has a 1934 Fleet biplane he restored to museum quality.
He flies it at least once a week and is always looking for a passenger. This plane was designed as a flight trainer but untypically places the pilot in the front seat and the passenger/student in the rear.
It has a 5-cylinder radial engine but I can't recall the manufacturer, not one I'd ever heard of.
The plane is fully aerobatic but he just cruises to avoid stressing the old motor...which he also rebuilt.
This guy is cool...he restores everything! He restored a very old windmill he drug out of DFW Airport. He restored a 30's John Deere tractor and a really nice '50 model Chevy pickup.
My favorites are the Fleet biplane and a beautiful red '46 Indian Chief, just like my Old Man used to have...it's picture is on my old "Eye Candy" thread on the main section.
He didn't know he was a "motorcycle guy" until he restored the Indian!
