Howdy from the still frozen north

Post by 5lv »

Hi all.

Just bought a 2004 Rockster last week, and true to form the weather has gone completely sour since then. This is my first BMW although I have been riding for nearly 50 years. I have been reading as a guest and have already learned a lot.

How do you include pictures?

Thank you.

The person I bought it from was the perfect seller, he kept meticulous records, every maintenance item was checked off or stamped by the dealer, and he kept it spotless.

Now that I have a few miles on it I noticed an increase in vibration starting at about 4k rpm. It is significant enough so that I don't want to ride there for any length of time. Can anybody tell me what's normal for these bikes?

Throttle bodies out of balance maybe?

I balanced the TB at idle with the big brass screws and the cables off idle. It is smoother all around, but it still starts to vibrate at about 4k. I have never ridden a boxer twin before so I don't have any frame of reference.

I bought a TWINMAX balancer soon after buying my Rockster and find it very easy to use.
Do you feel the vibes through the seat and pegs or is it just the bars? I moved my bars back and up an inch and it took some of the vibes out of the bars, maybe because I am sitting more upright I am not gripping the bars tightly. I found the Rockster bars a bit of a reach and not comfortable. Bar-backs are a cheap way to bring them closer if you need. Cheers.
