Hey Group,
Can the stock shocks be rebuilt? I am planning on getting a new R1200RT, but don't worry, I'm keeping my R1150R, just the new RT is a better two up bike for the gf and me.

I am planning on taking my R out on a 3 week tour this year and wondering if it's worth buying Ohlins/Wilburs/Progessive vs a rebuild (if possible)

They aren't leaking or anything, but I can tell, the bike doesn't ride as 'planted' as it used to in the twisties and it's time fix it before the ride out west. We want to get one more year out of her (two up) before we move to the new RT. Just trying to weigh the cost effectiveness of spending around 2K for new shocks (Ohlins/Wilburs, etc) vs. a rebuild.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I checked RealOEM.com, an online BMW parts site and it does not show any parts breakdown for either the front or rear shocks .

I don't believe the stock shocks are rebuildable. The loss of handling lead me to eventually replace both the rear and front shock, separately. The rear at about 25K. The 'planted' feeling returned! It was worth it to me.

Since I'm keeping her, the best bet is to just invest in her so she's ridable and I'll want to take her out. So, I think I'm going with Hyperpro's. Seem like a good reviews??

I made the switch to new shocks 2 years ago. I went with the Wilburs after talking to Ted at Beemershop. He sells the HyperPros as well. I'm no shock expert, but the bike handles sooo much better!!! Either way you go, you'll be happy with the upgrade!

I have a rocklster and 5K miles after I bought it I invested in rebuildable shocks. If your going to be a long time owner or a high milage type..in my opinion its worth the investment to get rebuildable ones.

I chose Olihns and have them rebuilt ever 25K or so (about once every 18 months+/-.

The initial investment was about $2,000 and the rebuild to new specs about $400 total. I have just over 160K on the bike so to me it was worth the investment to have fresh shocks on a regular basis. I usually time the rebuild (2 week turn) for Jan/Feb..Just got then back from ohlins USA in NC.

Not for everybody but works for me.

Any rebuildable should work.

I have to mention that the r1150r (s) use a different type than the rockster from ohlins. they use the 1100s type, which has a split piston design and are more expensive... so not sure what your olhin (if you went that way) would cost initialy but should be less that $2,000.

Just read your dilemma about your shocks. I have the address of a company in Canada that rebuilds stock BMW shocks but I would have to dig up the information if you are still interested. I also have a pair of stock shocks off a 2004 BMW Roadster that have 5000 miles on them that you could have for $200 shipped. Shipping would cost me $40. I planned on using them myself but being 5'6 I appreciate the sag in my original stock shocks with 45,000 miles. Anyway just thought I would throw it out there. I am sure a brand new pair of shocks would make a big difference in your ride.

Just got my bike fitted with HyperPro springs (original dampers).
They can also make custom ones, for if you are heavier / lighter than averidge.
I had HyperPro's on my old bike and that made a difference.
Tomorrows ride will be the first one with the new springs and the cruise controll.
